"International Law, Development Economics, and Third World Sovereignty: Squaring the Triangle"

While conventional narratives on statehood and sovereignty are largely confined to the disciplines of international law and international relations, recent expressions of the concept (both formal and informal) cannot be fully understood without venturing into ‘unconventional’ disciplinary terrain. Emergent articulations of sovereignty are, for instance, shaped significantly by economic theory, and more specifically, the enduring tug-of-war between market-based governance and bureaucratic regulation. My research project builds on this recognition by proposing a re-conceptualization of sovereignty that takes account of theoretical currents beyond international law, especially those in the field of development economics. I particularly hope to re-configure existing formulations under international law and international relations with ones taken from economic theory (as applied to the developing world). Ultimately, I intend to highlight the dialectic between formal statehood under international law and informal expressions of statehood under other disciplines.
