The Human Rights Program awards travel stipends to HLS students conducting human rights research abroad during winter term. The program’s emphasis is on research in the developing world for 3L papers, seminar papers or other academic work. HRP will also consider proposals from students traveling to the developing world in connection with human rights clinical or advocacy projects.
Grant
The amount of each grant is determined on a case-by-case basis taking into account the cost of travel to, and staying in, your proposed destination. The HRP winter term program is a financial grant program. HRP does not award academic credit for the winter term. Students should arrange for academic credit for the winter term separately with appropriate faculty or deans (e.g., Winter Term Writing Program, Winter Term Clinical Committee, seminar advisors). Awards will be determined on a competitive basis.
Deadlines
The deadline for winter term funding applications is November 8, 2007.
Application Process
Applicants should send the following materials to Shannon Philmon, HRP Program Assistant, in Pound 401 by 5:00 p.m. on November 8, 2007:
- Cover page listing this information (in the following order): name, HLS Status (e.g., 2L), email address, mailing address, and telephone number;
- resume or curriculum vitae;
- a 2-4 page, double-spaced proposal describing the nature of your work and the length of your stay;
- an HLS transcript (2Ls and 3Ls only);
- a detailed budget for your trip;
- a statement disclosing all other sources of HLS winter funding for which you have applied and listing the name of your faculty supervisor, if applicable.
Award Criteria
Awards will be announced in late November, in conjunction with other HLS winter funding programs. In making an award, HRP will consider, among other factors, the relationship of the proposal to human rights issues in the developing world, the thoughtfulness and clarity of the proposal, the reasonableness of the proposed budget, and the overall availability of funding for the project.
