Louise A. Halper (1944-2008)
With shock and heartache ILSP mourns the sudden loss, on June 21, of Louise Halper, a loyal friend of the Program since our paths crossed during her visiting professorship at Harvard Law School in 2004-2005. Louise was an intrepid bonne vivante, an insightful observer of people, and a smart and coherent colleague, whose writings on law and gender in Turkey and Iran captured the essence of the subject in quick and forceful sentences. Louise was the catalyst for two inspiring events held with ILSP on “Gender-Relevant Legislative Change in Muslim and non-Muslim Countries”: a workshop in 2005 at Harvard and a conference in 2007 at Washington & Lee University, her home base; we had looked forward to many more collaborative projects. Louise was the colleague nobody wants to miss and to our great sadness we now must do so.
