Joint Council

2007 Joint Council Survey Results

The HLS Joint Council conducted a survey in October 2007 to gather feedback on Joint Council priorities and issues of interest to the staff of HLS. Out of over 500 employees at HLS, 137 responded to the survey. Overall, respondents ranked a series of Joint Council activities or focus areas from "most important" to "least important" in this order:

  1. Quality of life issues (staff morale, fringe benefits)
  2. Career development and career mobility
  3. Communication between decision makers and staff
  4. Educational events (such as faculty lectures, personal finance workshops)
  5. Training events (such as career development workshops)
  6. Social events (such as the ice cream social)
  7. Community service events (organized group service activities)

Comparison of Results by Age

There were some variations on how these areas were prioritized by staff within different age ranges. Staff under age 35 ranked Career Development and Mobility as their top interest, closely followed by Quality of Life and Communication. Staff aged 35– 50 prioritized Quality of Life by a more substantial margin, followed by Communication. Staff aged over 50 emphasized communication, closely followed by Quality of Life and Faculty Lectures. The following graphs show these results.

Comparison of Results for Exempt, Non-Exempt Staff

Both exempt and non-exempt (HUCTW) staff ranked Quality of Life issues as the most important. Non-exempt staff listed Career Development and Mobility is the second most important issue, while exempt staff listed Communication. Non-exempt staff also considered Communication important, as it was the area most frequently listed as the second-highest priority by a wide margin. The following graphs show these results.
