Ayanna E. HinesAyanna Hines joined the Criminal Justice Institute (CJI) at Harvard Law School (HLS) in 2003 as administrative director. In her capacity, Ms. Hines is primarily responsible for the operational and financial management of the Institute while she also shepherds special projects and represents the Institute to select internal and external constituents. Prior to joining CJI, Ms. Hines was the program administrator for Project R.I.S.E., an academic enrichment program serving Boston-area minority youth. She managed Project R.I.S.E.’s first-ever partnership with a community based organization to provide life skills tutoring for developmentally delayed adults. In addition, she designed and taught the program’s college preparation workshop. Her position as senior administrative secretary at Boston University School of Law laid the foundation for her interest in education administration. Having gained experience that allowed her to transition into education administration, Ms. Hines began her professional life in athletics. She started in media relations as the sports information director at Emmanuel College (Boston, MA) and built upon that experience by becoming a media relations assistant for the St. Louis-based Missouri Valley Conference (The Valley). In her capacity at The Valley, Ms. Hines covered four sports for the 11-member NCAA Division I conference. The Valley provided exposure to other arenas within athletics, which opened the door of opportunity for her in the area of events management. Ms. Hines joined the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) in Lilburn, GA in 1996 as the events assistant and was promoted to events manager, a position she held for three years. Ms. Hines was responsible for planning and managing all aspects of the WBCA’s marquis event, its national convention, which is held annually in conjunction with the NCAA Women’s Final Four Championship. She also managed other WBCA programs sponsored by adidas, IKON, Nike, Sears, WNBA and the now-defunct American Basketball League (ABL). Under her leadership, the WBCA formalized its convention volunteer corps program and conducted it first-ever staff diversity training. Following the WBCA, Ms. Hines worked at The University of Nevada, Las Vegas where she served as director of basketball operations. Experience in events management both at the WBCA and The Windsor Group (Alexandria, VA) parlayed into B! Eventful, an event management contracting service. Managing national conferences for the Black Coaches Association and coordinating The Olympic Woman exhibition at the Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta, GA are among her more memorable projects. Ms. Hines’ community involvement began early on and it continues to be an important part of her life. In 1987 she founded the Organization for Minority Enrichment Growth and Advancement (O.M.E.G.A.), the first affinity group for students of African ancestry at Thayer Academy (Braintree, MA). She has served on the Community Capacity Building Committee of Boston Connects, Inc. since 2002 and now serves on the Human Development Committee. Most recently, Ms. Hines has been active on the Alumni Initiative Committee for the Yawkey Boys and Girls Club of Roxbury. Born in Greenville, MS and raised in Roxbury, MA, Ms. Hines is a graduate of Howard University. She and her husband reside in Boston, MA.
