    The American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts works to protect civil liberties in the Commonwealth. Through its lobbying efforts, education, and legal representation, it fights for the rights and protections provided for in the Constitution.

For information regarding civil legal services:

  • Greater Boston Legal Services
    Massachusetts' largest civil legal service agency offers low-income clients free representation in areas involving housing, employment, government benefits, family law, immigration, and health care.
  • Legal Services Center
    This Harvard Law School clinical organization located in Jamaica Plain, MA provides pro bono and low-cost civil legal assistance to low-income clients in areas including housing, employment, family law, consumer issues, special education issues, and more.
  • Harvard Legal Aid Bureau
    HLAB is a clinical organization at Harvard Law School that provides pro-bono legal assistance to low-income clients in cases concerning family law, government benefits, employment, and housing.
  • Legal Advocacy Resource Center
    In addition to providing telephone information and legal referrals on a wide range of civil issues, LARC conducts all intake for Greater Boston Legal Service (GBLS), Cambridge and Somerville Legal Services (CSLS), and Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP), but provides no direct representation.

    Comprehensive information on a range of civil legal issues, including helpful pamphlets, documents, and articles relating to legal issues are available on this site.

For information regarding criminal law or prison issues:

  • Committee for Public Counsel
    This state agency oversees all public defenders and court-appointed attorneys in Massachusetts.
  • Prisoners' Legal Services/Massachusetts Correctional Legal Services
    Focusing specifically on health and mental health care, guard-on-prisoner violence, physical conditions of confinement, and segregation and isolation, this organization provides legal service to people in Massachusetts prisons and jails, including inmates at Bridgewater State Hospital.

For information regarding housing related issues:

  • Tenant Advocacy Project
    TAP is a student practice organization at Harvard Law School that provides legal advice and representation for public housing tenants at hearings before local housing authorities. Cases handled include public housing evictions, application denials, reasonable accommodation requests, transfer denials, and subsidy terminations (for subsidies administered by housing authorities, not project-based subsidies). TAP also provides telephone advice on general landlord-tenant problems to tenants in the greater Boston area who meet our income guidelines.
