Clinical Enrollment Prerequisites

Students enroll in the Clinic during the clinical course registration process.  This lottery process is administered by the Office of Clinical and Pro Bono Programs, and usually takes place in early April.  Pending availability, students can also add the clinic to their course load during the first week of each semester.

Students who are enrolled in the clinic are also automatically enrolled in one of the concurrent advanced negotiation and dispute resolution offering at HLS.  At present, students taking the clinic during the fall semester are enrolled in the two-credit Dispute Systems Design seminar, whereas students taking the clinic in spring will be enrolled in the one-credit Negotiation Clinical seminar.  In addition to the academic credits received for these courses, students in the clinic also receive two, three, or four clinical credits, depending on how much time per week they average working on the clinic.  Details of the registration procedure are available at the Office of Clinical and Pro Bono Programs website.

The class and the clinic are bundled together as co-requisites, meaning that no students are permitted to take the clinic without the course.  The only exceptions are for students who have already taken the clinic once before and are eligible for continuing clinical credit.  Pass/fail independent clinical credit is also an option for those students contemplating relevant projects that could not otherwise be done through this clinic, such as dispute systems design work done abroad during the winter semester.  Students interested in these options should secure Professor Bordone’s permission and consult the Office of Clinical and Pro Bono Programs for more information.

Only those students who have taken the basic Negotiation Workshop at HLS can participate in the Clinic.  Students currently enrolled in the workshop are not eligible for the program until they have completed the course.  Information on the registration procedures for the negotiation workshop is available at the registrar’s website:
