Rafael Mares is the founder of the Healthy Homes and Environmental Justice Project in the Housing Law and Litigation Practice Unit, which focuses on abatement of environmental hazards in homes and fair housing cases. The goal of this project is to prevent childhood lead poisoning and asthma attacks and to promote equal housing opportunities. Rafael also supervises students in the Recording Artist’s Project (RAP), an organization he co-founded and co-chaired while a student at HLS. He joined the Legal Services Center as the Albert M. Sacks Clinical Fellow in September of 1999. Rafael also practiced in the Housing Law Unit as a student during the 1997-98 academic year. During the summers of 1997 and 1998, Rafael worked at Alternatives for Community and Environment in Roxbury, Massachusetts representing environmental justice groups. In 1998, he also worked at Pro Bono, Inc., a legal services provider in Puerto Rico. Prior to law school, Rafael worked on environmental justice issues with various non-profit organizations in Washington, DC. He received his B.S. in Integrated Natural Resources from the University of Vermont in 1994 and his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1999.
