In October 2005, six HLS students assumed leadership roles at the Legal Services Center. Students Jeff Jamison '06 and Mindy Klenoff '06, Saba Bireda '07, Sarah Bolling '07, Beth Tossell '07, and Rachel Wainer Apter '07 inaugurated a new Student Advisory Committee for the Center.
During the 2006/2007 academic year, current members of the Student Advisory Committee are: third year students Rachel Wainer Apter, Sarah Bolling, Karen Tenenbaum and Kevin Terrazas, and second year students Nick Mattison, Mariel Davenport Pollack and Brendan St. Amant.
The role of the committee is to improve the student experience at the Center, to act as a liaison between students and the Office of Clinical and Pro Bono Programs, and to ensure that students on campus are better informed about the wealth of opportunities available at the Center.
In addition to conducting outreach to other students, the committee also hopes to influence changes in some of the policies governing clinical education at the law school.
The Student Advisory Committee has already had several successes. At its request, the Center has been converted to a wireless environment. This is a significant improvement for clinical students who will now be able to work on their laptops at the Center and take better advantage of the new clinical “flex time” policy, which allows them to do work outside of the office as well. “Before the conversion to wireless, it was difficult for some of us to work at home because all of our files were on the office computers,” said Tossell. “Now that we can use our laptops at the Center, we have much more flexibility.”
