What is Clinical course registration?

Clinical registration is a process in which students select preferences for clinical sections in the following academic year. This process occurs online through the HLS student registration system, MyPlan (https://myplan.law.harvard.edu). Students select their preferences from a list of clinical sections, and at the close of clinical registration, student preferences will be processed in a random order for enrollment.

Enrolling in a clinical section will enroll a student in both the course and clinical components. In the clinical section, the class and clinical are required co-requisites of one another. Dropping any clinical section will drop the student from both the course and clinical (and workshop, if applicable).

Clinical courses that require the permission of the instructor will not be available in clinical course registration (please see the clinical course's description for specific enrollment information).

Clinicals must be taken in conjunction with an academic course, and are named after the course that offers the clinical component.

08-09 Clinical Registration

Clinical registration for 2008-2009 will begin in April 2008:

  • Opens: Monday, April 7 at 9:00am (EST)
  • Closes: Tuesday, April 8 at 5:00pm (EST)
  • Results will be available through MyPlan on Thursday, April 10.

1L and 2L HLS students will be able to select preferences for:

  • Fall clinicals
  • Fall-Winter clinicals
  • Fall-Spring clinicals
  • Winter or Spring clinicals with a Fall class
  • Fall or Spring Legal Profession clinicals

If you missed clinical registration from April 7-8:

  • You can still waitlist for clinicals (see the categories above) by emailing clinical@law.harvard.edu.
  • Fall clinicals were consistently oversubscribed, but there is much waitlist movement during the summer.
  • Keep in mind that many fall clinicals will be offered again in the spring.
  • Registration for winter or spring clinicals (that do not have a fall class) will be in November 2008.

To see what clinicals will be offerred in 2008-2009, please see the Clinical Curriculum. Offerings shaded in yellow indicate they were in fall clinical registration April 7-8, 2008. Clinicals listed as "By Permission" are not in clinical course registration (see course description for "By Permission" admission instructions) .

You should also browse our Clinics page, which offers information on the various in-house and externship clinical placements.

Using the MyPlan "Course Registrations" page

  • You may select preferences for as few or as many clinical courses as you like in clinical registration .
  • It does not matter when you submit your preferences during the registration time frame. At the close of clinical registration, all preferences will be processed at the same time.
  • Once you submit your first set of preferences, you may log back into MyPlan and change the order of your preferences until clinical registration closes.
  • Once clinical registration closes you will no longer be able to set your preferences or change existing preferences.
  • Clinical registration results will be available through MyPlan.
  • Dropping a clinical course will drop you from both the classroom and clinical components, You may attempt to re-register for the class-only section during an add period only if there is availability.
  • Some classes or clinicals span multiple terms: F/W=Fall and Winter, W/S=Winter and Spring, F/S=Fall and Spring
  • If you are idle in MyPlan for 15 minutes, MyPlan will log you out.

Credits

The majority of clinical courses allow you to elect the number of clinical credits you wish to receive based on the number of clinical hours worked each week in the semester:

Fall and Spring Terms:
2 clinical credits = 10 hours of clinical work per week
3 clinical credits = 15 hours of clinical work per week
4 clinical credits = 20 hours of clinical work per week

Winter Term:
2 clinical credits = 40 hours of clinical work per week

The maximum number of clinical credits a student may take for the Fall or Spring term is four (4) ; the minimum is two (2) credits. During the three-week Winter term, students work 40 hours a week for 2 clinical credits.

Students may only take one clinical per term. However, students may take the classroom component of two clinical courses in the same term if the clinicals are in different terms.

The credits you earn for the classroom component of a clinical count as classroom credits, and towards the 36 classroom credits JDs need to graduate.

Up to 12 clinical credits can count towards the JD degree. Between clinical, cross registration, and written work credits, up to 16 credits can count towards the JD degree.

Clinical Placements

Clinical placements are generally not determined at the time of enrollment. Our Clinical Curriculum provides information information on the typical clinical placements available through each clinical course. Students in clinical courses with several placement options or without specific placements will be contacted either by the instructor arranging the clinical placements or by the Office of Clinical and Pro Bono Programs prior to the clinical semester to coordinate a placement. Students enrolled in clinical courses with only one placement option will be contacted by that clinical placement with information on orientations and scheduling clinical work. Additional placement questions may be directed to Liz Solar, Assistant Director of Externships and Administration (esolar@law.harvard.edu, 617-495-3765). Students are also welcome to visit the Office of Clinical and Pro Bono Programs in Austin 102 and 108.

Professional Responsibility Requirement

3Ls that have not met the legal profession requirement must sign up for a legal profession course during the Clinical or Legal Profession course registrations. The classroom component of certain clinical courses satisfies the Law School's professional responsibility requirement. Such clinical courses may only be available through clinical registration.

If you know you would like to satisfy your legal profession requirement with a clinical course, you should participate in clinical registration. If you do not attain a seat in one of the clinical courses that satisfy the legal profession requirement, 3Ls may participate in the Legal Profession course registration. 3Ls who do not have a Legal Profession course in their schedule after the Legal Profession or Clinical course registrations will be automatically added to any remaining legal profession course.

2008-2009 clinical courses that satisfy the Professional Responsibility requirement are:

  • ITA: Civil - Skills and Ethics in Clinical Practice (HLAB members only)
  • ITA: Criminal Justice A & B
  • ITA Criminal: Prosecution Perspectives
  • Legal Profession: Delivery of Legal Services A & B
  • Legal Profession: The Lawyering Process A & B
