Overview - Domestic Travel

The Office of Clinical and Pro Bono Programs has a limited amount of funding available for students participating in a Winter Term clinical program within the United States in order to offset the cost of travel. Award amounts will be determined on a case-by-case basis, based on the merit of the proposal and the financial need of the applicant. Students must apply for funding and submit their funding application at the time of their Independent or Continuing Clinical application submission. Students seeking funding will be required to sign a waiver allowing the Office of Clinical and Pro Bono Programs to access student financial records.

Funding Guidelines

Project expenses should be minimized as much as possible.  Expenses submitted for funding consideration must be costs that are necessary for the completion of the clinical project.  Costs must be reasonable and may require documentation (e.g. airfare printout, train itinerary with cost, hostel rate, etc).

Travel expenses may include air, train, or bus fares.  Only economy-class fares are eligible for funding.  If travel will not originate in Boston, it should be because it is cheaper to travel from your origination city to your destination than it is to travel from Boston to your destination.  If it is not cheaper than traveling from Boston, we may only be able to fund a portion of the travel expense.  One-way flights are eligible for funding.

Non-travel costs such as lodging or a car rental (for rural areas) may be considered for funding if your project requires the expenditure and the cost is reasonable.  If determined to be a necessary project cost, the item may be funded in part or in whole.

For housing, we encourage students to contact family or friends in the area of the project destination to set up accommodations.  Other housing options to consider are through local universities, churches, hostels, or apartment rentals.  Please remember that housing costs should be moderate, and may be funded in part or in whole.

Funding Restrictions

  • Students conducting their Winter Term clinical work within Greater Boston are not eligible for funding, since funding is meant to offset the cost of travel to the project destination.

  • Only expenses essential to the completion of the project should be submitted for funding consideration.

  • Local public transportation costs are not eligible (this rule pertains to clinicals in the fall or spring semesters as well).

  • Student financial need is a factor in allocating award amounts.

  • Students conducting a project in their home city or region are not eligible for funding.

Applying for Funding

Students conducting clinical work within the U.S. who are interested in receiving Winter Term funding must complete the Winter Term Domestic Travel Funding Application. The funding application will ask for detailed information about the expenses you will incur as a result of your clinical project. Students should research expenses ahead of time. If a grant is awarded, the recipient will need to submit documentation of expenses (e.g. airfare printout, train itinerary with cost, rental lease, etc) before a check is cut.

If a student does not pursue or complete the project, then he/she is responsible for notifying the Office of Clinical and Pro Bono Programs and returning any funding received.

The application deadline for Winter Term Domestic Travel Funding is November 8, 2007.

Funding Amounts and Notification

Award amounts will be determined on a case by case basis, though we will strive to fund as many legitimate project costs as possible. Decisions will be announced on Monday, November 26 by email, and students must accept or decline the grant by Friday, November 30, 2007. Receipt of the grant check is contingent upon proper documentation of expenses, which should be submitted well in advance of the project start date.

If a student does not pursue or complete the clinical project, then he/she is responsible for notifying Office of Clinical and Programs and returning any funding received. The Office of Clinical and Pro Bono Programs may ask for confirmation of expenses.
