This seminar will consider classic and contemporary questions about the nature and social functions of law and legal systems. Readings are drawn mainly from the tradition of analytical jurisprudence. Ideas associated with a variety of schools of thought about law, including legal positivism, natural law theory, and critical legal studies, will be explored. Topics include description and prescription in legal theory; the connections between law and moral beliefs and judgments; the nature and basis of legal authority and obligation; issues in legal interptretation; the problem of legal injustice; and the concept of legal rights.
