The Making Rights Real clinic will build on a partnership between Professor White, Harvard law students, and a network of Ghanaian Human Rights / Development organizations which began in 2002. Each year this team plans and implements the winter's activities, which focus on "the right to health," i.e., on making the nation's health care system work for its most vulnerable groups. In January of 2013 the team will build upon activities which began in 2012 with persons with disabilities. Thus, the 2013 team will work on the design, enactment, and implementation of new legislation on disabilities, including psycho-social disabilities, that is consistent with -- and goes beyond -- the new UN disability Convention. This work will address a range of human rights, from core political rights like voting; to economic and social rights like access to education, a livelihood, and living with dignity in local communities; to group rights like having a voice in policy formation. Specific clinical activities include the full range of conventional and community lawyering strategies, such as legal research and analysis; reviewing and drafting legislation and regulations; strategy mapping; human rights documentation; participatory action research; partner briefings; designing and facilitating grassroots education and empowerment workshops; conducting community meetings; and working with media. In January of 2013, the work will take place primarily in Ghana's high poverty far north, with some activities taking place in the Accra region. In addition to Professor White and Ghanaian partners, the students will work with teaching assistants with prior experience in the course.
