My favorite course at HLS was Professional Services during the 2007 fall term. It was a very atypical law school class. In that course we analyzed how law firms, investment banks, consulting firms and other professional services firms work, what are good strategies, how they develop their people, etc. The material is based on Business School cases and the teacher is a former member of the Business School faculty. With every case you learn a great amount about how the real business and legal world works, and you also get to know yourself better and what you are looking for in your professional life. Last but not least, the professor who taught this course, Ashish Nanda, is probably the best teacher I have ever had. His ability to make you feel as though you were part of the case and to ask yourself the right questions is astonishing. One other great point about this class is the fact that there are almost always prominent guest speakers, such as the managing partner of Wachtell Lipton or Linklaters, or a senior partner from Goldman Sachs. To me this class alone was worth coming to Harvard, but of course there are many many other good reasons.
