Summer Academic Fellowship Program

This summer, HLS will continue its Summer Academic Fellowship Program.  The Fellowship is for HLS students interested in pursuing academic careers in law, particularly as law professors.  It is designed to give students the opportunity to write and eventually publish a scholarly paper.  

The fellowship is available only to current HLS JD, LLM, and SJD students, including students graduating in May 2013.  Fellows are free to work part-time or full-time at other jobs, or to prepare for the bar exam, so long as they can find sufficient time to complete their writing projects.  But all Fellows must be in residence at HLS for at least one week over the course of the summer (any one week).  Fellows who wish to spend more time at HLS over the summer working exclusively on their projects are invited to be in residence for as many as six weeks.

All Fellows will receive a stipend based on the same formula used for the Summer Public Interest Fellowship (see:  http://www.law.harvard.edu/current/sfs/spif/index.html for details), and all Fellows who successfully produce publishable papers at the end of the summer will receive an additional $1,000 Fellowship award.

Applicants for the Fellowship must sign on a Faculty Adviser who will be committed to supervising their project and with whom they will be able to work closely over the course of the Fellowship.   

Applications for the Fellowship are due on or before February 4, 2013; decisions will be made by Wednesday, February 27.

Please submit the following application materials:

1) Resume and HLS transcript;

2) A statement of the number and which weeks of the summer you plan to be in residence, and a description of other summer employment or activities (if any);

3) A proposal of not more than 2000 words describing the project to be undertaken.  For writing already in progress, you should submit a draft along with a brief description of how you plan to develop it into publishable scholarship;

4) A brief recommendation (a single paragraph is enough) from the applicant’s faculty adviser, submitted directly to OAA@law.harvard.edu, speaking to the scholarly potential of the project and of the applicant more generally.
