Dissertation
Preliminary Title: American Liberal Constitutionalism and the Creation of the Constitutional Order of the Philippine Islands, 1913-1941
My dissertation will investigate the process by which American federal and colonial officials and the Filipino political and intellectual elite constructed the constitutional order of the Philippine Islands in the early 20th century following the late 19th to early 20th century model of American liberal constitutionalism. It will consider the implications of the colonial legacy for the independent Philippine Republic and reflect upon the significance of this seminal experiment for the project of American liberal constitutionalism.
