Negotiation Workshop - Application Procedures for LL.M students and cross-registrants to the Negotiation Workshop at Harvard Law School
WINTER 2008 (LAW-44100A WINTER/SPRING)
AND/ OR
SPRING 2008 (LAW-44100A SPRING)
Harvard Law School will offer three Negotiation Workshops, one each semester (fall, winter, spring) during the 2007-2008 school year.
PLEASE NOTE: There is a separate application procedure for 1L students who are interested in taking the Negotiation Workshop as their Spring Elective. Please see the 1L Application Procedures for more information.
This is the application process for LL.M. and cross-registered students interested in taking either the Winter or Spring Negotiation Workshop. A limited number of LL.M. students and students registered at other Harvard graduate schools, the Tufts-Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, and MIT-Sloan will be admitted to each of these workshops.
The Winter 2008 Negotiation Workshop will be taught at Harvard Law School from Wednesday, January 2, 2008 through Friday, January 18, 2008.
The Spring 2008 Negotiation Workshop will be taught at Harvard Law School from Wednesday, January 30, 2008 through Thursday, April 17, 2008.
Applicants for both courses should know that participation in the Workshop requires that students be highly proficient in English – able to absorb complex factual memoranda quickly, write well under severe time constraints, and participate fully and clearly in all negotiations exercises.
Both Negotiation Workshops are demanding courses requiring full participation during the course period. Note especially in making travel plans that students not present at the beginning of the course (9:00 a.m. on January 2, 2008 for the Winter Workshop and 3:00 p.m. on January 30, 2008 for the Spring Workshop) will be dropped from the course immediately and replaced by a student on the wait list.
You may apply for admission to the Winter and/or the Spring Negotiation Workshop by writing a letter describing your background and submitting it with your resume by noon on Friday, October 19, 2007. Your application must be received by this date.
Please be sure to indicate clearly in your letter whether you are applying for the Winter Workshop, the Spring Workshop, or both. To increase your chances of being admitted to one of these workshops, we suggest you apply to both workshops, indicating any preference you have as between the two. If you do not indicate clearly to which workshop you are applying your application will be considered for admission to both workshops, with no preference as between the two.
Your application letter should tell us succinctly who you are, why you want to take the Workshop, what experiences you have had that may enrich the Workshop for others, how the Workshop fits into your broader academic or career goals, and any other information you deem relevant and persuasive. The letter should include your local address, telephone number, and email address.
Please email your letter and resume to Erica Benedick at ebenedick@law.harvard.edu or deliver them to Erica Benedick, Harvard Law School, Pound Hall 513, Cambridge, MA 02138. REMEMBER that we must receive your letter by noon on October 19. Any application received after noon on October 19 will automatically be placed at bottom of the waiting list, which can be quite long.
As indicated in the winter and spring course descriptions, the Workshops will be jointly taught by a team of instructors, each of whom will be responsible with the help of a teaching assistant for a working group of 24 students. The Workshops will be taught as a unified course, and admitted students will be assigned to a specific working group, using diversity as a primary consideration.
All applicants will be notified of their status by email according to the following schedule:
- Applicants for the Winter 2008 Negotiation Workshop (Mnookin, et. al.) will be notified of their status during the week of November 12, 2007 and will have until Monday, November 19, 2007 at 12:00, noon to accept or decline a position in the Workshop.
- Applicants for the Spring 2008 Negotiation Workshop (Bordone, et. al.) will be notified of their status during the week of November 26, 2007 and will have until Friday, December 7, 2007 at 12:00, noon to accept or decline a position in the Workshop.
If you have further questions, please contact Erica Benedick at ebenedick@law.harvard.edu or 617-495-1618.
Endnote
1Note that even though the course material for the Fall Negotiation Workshop will differ from the Winter and Spring Negotiation Workshops, students may only enroll in one negotiation workshop during their time at Harvard Law School.
