Additional Rules Relating to the Written Work Requirement--LL.M.
5. Additional Rules Relating to the LL.M. Written Work Requirement--As set forth above at II(A)(4), all students are required to fulfill the Written Work Requirement. The mandatory registration schedule for the Written Work Requirement is set forth at VI(F) and the academic deadlines are set forth at VII. The following rules and guidelines also apply to the Written Work Requirement:
a) Supervision by Visiting Faculty--Writing credits under the supervision of visiting faculty must be registered to the term(s) of the visitor's appointment. Note that many visitors have Law School appointments for only one term.
b) Prohibition against Compensation--In no event will credit be granted for a paper the work for which the student has been compensated, in whole or in part.
c) Registration for Written Work--A student must register for the Written Work Requirement in advance by submitting a Written Work Requirement Registration and Proposal form to the proposed faculty advisor for signature; details for the proposal will be provided by the Graduate Program. Faculty members may require additional preliminary information, such as a discussion of the subject matter, an outline, or a longer description. A student should submit the Registration and Proposal form to the faculty member, as well as any other material requested, by the deadline for the current year, set forth below at VI(F). Since faculty members may require additional preliminary work before accepting a proposal, students are advised to seek approval well in advance of this date.
d) Supervision--The list of faculty supervisors for 2006-07 appears at www.law.harvard.edu/academics/registrar/written-work/supervisors.php.
e) Awarding of Additional Credit--On rare occasions an LL.M. student writing the 25-Page Paper may seek one additional credit where the paper significantly exceeds the original parameters in form (at least 25 additional pages) and in substance. Under the above conditions, the student may earn such credit only through advance arrangements with the student's faculty advisor and with approval of the Registrar and the Graduate Program. Students writing the LL.M. Long Paper or the LL.M. Thesis are not eligible for additional credit.
