Configuration
All new faculty members will receive their new computer with an email account already configured and ready to use. If the faculty member has an additional computer he/she would like configured, he/she should contact Faculty-Staff Help Desk in Hauser 020 between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. to schedule an appointment. Laptops should be brought to the help desk while desktop computers will be configured by a technician in the faculty member's office.
Specific configuration instructions can be found at http://internal.law.harvard.edu/its/software/configuration/
Password Change Utility
The password change utility can be found at https://ldap.law.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/webtools.cgi?operation=password. Please note that this utility will not only change the email password, but will also change the password for internal HLS sites, VPN access, and MyHLS.
Auto-Reply/Auto-Forwarding
To create an out of the office message or to set-up auto-forwarding, please visit https://www.camail.harvard.edu:8890/msadm/user/.
Spam Filtering
UIS (University Information Systems) scans all incoming mail and identifies problematic Spam by adding additional headers to your messages. You can configure Outlook and Eudora to filter these messages in order to avoid filling your Inbox with Spam. Visit http://www.camail.harvard.edu/ for documentation on how to configure Spam filters in Eudora, Outlook, and Entourage (scroll down to the section labeled Spam Scanning). This link also has a list of frequently asked questions. UIS has installed a product called Spam Assassin on the mail servers through which all e-mail traffic passes. The Spam Assassin program looks at each message and evaluates it against a very large set of rules relating to the content, format, and headers of the message. Each rule has a point value assigned to it, and if a message meets the criteria of a rule it will add the points to the message score. Messages with a total score over a certain point threshold (which UIS configures with HLS ITS input) are then labeled as Spam. Note that Spam is only labeled with extra information in the headers, NOT DELETED. Users must configure their email client if they want to filter this information into a Spam folder.
Quota
Each faculty member has a 120 megabyte quota. A quota-checking utility runs on the server at regular intervals. The quota-checker has two effects. First, each night, it mails warnings to users who have exceeded 80% of their quota. Tehre will also be a quota warning displayed in the CAMail web client. Second, if the email account goes over quota, OR if the system tries to deliver a message that would put the email account over quota, further "over-quota" mail is not delivered. Instead, it is queued for later delivery. The queue persists for five days. Messages more than five days old are discarded. Faculty should the log into CAMail to clear out existing mail to get back under quota at any time.
Email Backups
ITS is happy to schedule an automatic back-up a faculty member's email to the network. To have email backed-up, please contact the Faculty-Staff Help Desk. A Technical Support Analyst will visit the faculty member's desk to set up an automated email back-up process.
Leaving HLS
Please login to CAMail and turn on the auto-reply and/or auto-forwarding features. If these features are enabled before the email account expires, the auto-reply and auto-forwarding will work for 6 months past the email account expiration date. To login to CAMail Account Management Tools, visit https://www.camail.harvard.edu. Then click the link entitled, "CAMail Account Management Page" located on the page. Faculty should login with his,her full email address and email password. Then configure options via "Edit Mail Forwarding List" (for auto-forwarding) and "Enable/Disable Vacation Notice" (for auto-reply).
Also, if a faculty member would like a back-up of his/her email, please contact the Faculty-Staff Help Desk. This should be requested before the Faculty member officially leaves HLS.
