Standard Software Suite
All computers purchased through ITS have the Law School's standard software suite pre-installed. Faculty members are requested to consult with ITS on software purchases that are outside of the standard software suite. This will allow ITS to keep track of additional software purchases and investigate if this additional software should be added to our standard software suite.
Standard Software Suite includes:
- Windows XP
- Office 2003 Professional (Access, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher)
- Outlook
- Adobe Acrobat Reader
- HLS/FAS VPN Client Software
- Internet Explorer/Netscape
- RealPlayer 10
- SSH Secure Shell
Additional Faculty Software
Also for HLS faculty, ITS provides, supports, and pre-installs the following software on all Harvard owned computers:
- Corel WordPerfect
- Adobe Acrobat (full version)
- EndNote
ITS also supports Dreamweaver, however, this software needs to be purchased by the faculty member. Please note that support for sites that do not use the HLS-template system is not available at this time. For more information about Dreamweaver, please contact the Faculty-Staff Help Desk at 5.0722.
For non-supported software like STATA, SPSS, and FolderMatch, the professor's discretionary portion of his/her faculty allowance will be billed. For VPs and lecturers, software that cost over $250 will need pre-approval from the Office of Academic Affairs.
Microsoft Office License
Due to the liberal Harvard-specific software license for Microsoft Office, professors and assistant professors can also request a second copy of Microsoft Office to install on another computer (a total of two copies). Unfortunately, additional licenses of programs such as WordPerfect, Adobe Acrobat full version, Lotus Organizer, and EndNote will need to be billed back to the discretionary portion of his/her faculty allowance.
Purchasing non-HLS Supported Software
For non-supported software like STATA, SPSS, and FolderMatch, the professor's discretionary portion of his/her faculty allowance will be billed. For VPs and lecturers, software that cost over $250 will need pre-approval from the Office of Academic Affairs.

The Polling Tool (Questionnaire Software)
The Polling Tool is an on-line application that allows users to create on-line surveys. You could also use the Polling Tool for posting quizzes, exams, and surveys. You must have a valid HUID and pin to author a poll, but the poll can be taken by anyone with an internet connection. For more information about the polling tool, please visit http://icommons.harvard.edu/userdocs/pollhtml/using_the_polling_tool.htm.
