Q:  What is a LEFA account?

A:  LEFA stands for Lifelong Email Forwarding Address, this email account will make it easier for you to stay connected to your classmates and everyone else in the HLS community.  It will also act as you user-name for HLS web resources.

Q:  What is the difference between my LEFA account and my Post.Harvard.Edu Account?

A: Your LEFA Account is a forward only email address just like the Post.harvard.edu account.

The Harvard University Alumni Association provides every Harvard alumnus with a Post account, if desired.  Your post.harvard.edu account is used as a user ID to log onto general Harvard Alumni websites. For information regarding post.harvard.edu please go to: https://post.harvard.edu/olc/pub/HAA/register/register.cgi

Harvard Law School provides you with a LEFA account which includes your law school degree type and graduation year. Your LEFA account is used for HLS specific webpage logins as well as an email address for your cohorts to easily contact you.

Q:  What should I do to prepare for the changes to my account on July 31st?

A:  Prior to July 31st you should set your existing @law.harvard.edu account to forward to an external email address and copy any emails from your account, that you wish to keep, to another location.  For directions to set forwarding for your LEFA account please go here:  http://www.law.harvard.edu/administration/its/students/email.php#forwarding

You should forward your LEFA account to an external email address that you check frequently.  You should NOT forward your LEFA account to your existing @law.harvard.edu email address.

Q:  How do I ‘backup’ or ‘copy’ email messages I would like to keep?

A:   There are many ways to accomplish this.  If you have a desktop client, like Outlook, using POP, you will need to pop your messages one last time before you account is changed.  If you are using IMAP or do not have a desktop client set up please contact the student help desk to discuss your options. phone: (617) 495.9576 or email: help@law.harvard.edu

Q:  What happens on July 31st after graduation?

A:  On July 31st, at 12:01 AM, after your graduation date your @law.harvard.edu will no longer exist.  Your @law.harvard.edu account will be replaced with your LEFA account, your @law.harvard.edu account forwarding settings will continue to work as set prior to July 31st.  Your Email address will now be your LEFA address and you must do the following 3 steps:

  1. Change your default password that is set to your HUID by going to https://ldap.law.harvard.edu.
  2. Log into MyMail using old-username@jdxx or old-username@llmxx or old-username@sjd (xx equals your graduation year) and your new password. 
  3. Set forwarding for your LEFA account to an external email address that you check frequently.  You should NOT forward your LEFA account to your previous @law.harvard.edu email address.
