Setting Automatic Updates in Windows Vista

Microsoft releases periodic updates to patch security holes in their operating systems. You need to download and install these updates to help protect your computer from viruses and hackers that exploit these security holes.

Windows Vista can download critical updates automatically, ensuring that you stay current with the latest security patches directly from Microsoft. You should update your computer immediately and then enable automatic updates as per the directions below.

Because Automatic Updates only delivers critical updates to your computer, it is still important to periodically visit microsoft.com periodically to check for non-critical updates that Microsoft has released.

  1. Click on the Start Menu, and then click Control Panel
  2. In Control Panel, double-click on Security Icon
  3. Under Security Center click Turn Auto Updates On/Off to On
  4. Close the Control Panel
