I am pleased to unveil the inaugural issue of HLS Brief - - the place to reconnect with HLS and fellow HLS alumni. In this issue you will learn about the launching of the Law School’s new Public Service Venture Fund and hear from our faculty on topics as diverse as an innovative new problem solving course, the representation of professional athletes, the economy and issues facing the Presidency. Please direct your attention to HLS Connect, the Law School’s online alumni directory. To date more than 8,000 alumni have registered and I encourage each of you to register and reconnect with the Law School community. HLS Connect creates the unique opportunity for alumni to serve as advisors to current HLS students sharing valuable career advice and expertise. 	Harvard Law School Launches New Public Service Venture Fund Harvard Law School recently announced the creation of the Public Service Venture Fund, which will start by awarding $1 million in grants every year to help graduating students pursue careers in public service. Read More
	David Souter to Speak at 359th Commencement David H. Souter, '61, LL.B. '66, who served nearly two decades on the U.S. Supreme Court, will be the principal speaker at the Afternoon Exercises of Harvard’s 359th Commencement. Read More
	An Innovative New Course Teaches Students to Solve Problems Right from the Start David Wilkins ’80, professor of law and director of the Program on the Legal Profession at HLS, is one of seven instructors who taught a new workshop on problem solving that puts students in the position of real-life attorneys. Over a three-week period, it presents them with seven very different clients, from a multinational corporation with child-labor issues to a tenant facing eviction after the landlord has lost her home in foreclosure. 	Goldsmith in The New Republic: The Accountable Presidency In the following essay that appeared in the Feb. 1, 2010, edition of The New Republic, HLS Professor Jack Goldsmith reviews two recent books on the presidency of George W. Bush: Crisis and Command: A History of Executive Power from George Washington to George W. Bush, by John Yoo, and Bomb Power: The Modern Presidency and the National Security State, by Garry Wills. Goldsmith, who served as an assistant attorney general in the Bush administration, is the author of The Terror Presidency.

New Strategies for a Changing Job Market

In the public and private sectors, Harvard Law students are facing a tougher job market than in recent memory. This year's graduating class will see only 80 percent of the firms that participated in the on-campus recruitment process last year return, according to Mark Weber, assistant dean for career services. The Public Interest Auction is the largest annual event at HLS and is run entirely by members of the 1L class. The Auction celebrates the public interest community at HLS and raises money to fund a portion of Summer Public Interest Funding (SPIF). Last year, over 1,000 individuals and organizations played a role in the success of the 2009 Auction through volunteer work, donations and attendance.
