This Menninger Memorial Lecture, delivered to the American Psychiatric Association and published in the American Journal of Psychiatry revists my view of personality through a programmatic argument about psychiatry. Alas, this proposal for late twentieth century psychiatry continues to serve as a proposal for early twenty first century psychiatry.
