Visiting Professors
Philip ALSTON has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Fall Term 2008. He will teach a section of the course International Law and the seminar Economic and Social Rights. Alston is the John Norton Pomeroy Professor of Law at New York University School of Law where his teaching and research interests focus on human rights law; international law; and international organizations.
Akhil Reed AMAR has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Spring Term 2009. His teaching program will consist of a section of Constitutional Law: Separation of Powers, Federalism, and the Fourteenth Amendmend and the seminar Constitutional Law Advanced: Reading the Constitution. Amar is the Southmayd Professor of Law and Political Science at Yale University. His teaching and research focus on constitutional law.
Brian ARNOLD has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Winter Term 2009, to teach the course International Tax Policy. Arnold is Professor of Law Emeritus at the University of Western Ontario, where he taught tax law for 28 years. He is now with Goodmans LLP, in Toronto.
Rachel BARKOW has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Fall Term 2008, to teach a section of the course Legislation and Regulation and the reading group The Power of Prosecutors. Barkow is Professor of Law at New York University School of Law where her teaching and research interests focus on administrative law; criminal law; and separation of powers.
Lily BATCHELDER has been Visiting Associate Professor of Law for the Winter Term 2009, to teach the course Tax and Social Policy. Batchelder is Associate Professor of Law and Public Policy at New York University School of Law, where her teaching and research interests focus on tax law and social welfare.
Hanina BEN-MENAHEM has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Spring Term 2009. His teaching program will be Jewish Law: The Legal Thought of Maimonides, Talmudic Law for Beginners, and Talmudic Law Advanced: The responsa literature: Reading Group. Ben-Menahem is Professor of Law at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Institute for Research in Jewish Law.
Bethany BERGER has been appointed Visiting Associate Professor of Law for the 2008-09 academic year. Her teaching program will consist of the course American Indian Law and the seminar Tribal Justice Systems in the Fall Term 2008, and a section of Property and the reading group Race and Property in the Spring Term 2009. Berger is Associate Professor of Law at the University of Connecticut School of Law. Her teaching and research interests include: American Indian Law, taxation of American Indians, jurisdiction over non-members in tribal legal systems, and property.
Lisa Schultz BRESSMAN has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Fall Term 2008. She will teach a section of the course Legislation and Regulation and the reading group Popular Books on the Supreme Court. Bressman is Professor of Law and Co-Director of the Regulatory Program at Vanderbilt University Law School. Her teaching and research interests include: administrative law and constitutional theory.
Corey BRETTSCHNEIDER has been appointed Visiting Associate Professor of Law for the Winter Term 2009. He will co-teach (with David Estlund) the course Democratic Theory and Law. Brettschneider is Associate Professor of Political Science at Brown University. His teaching and research interests include: political theory and public law, with an emphasis in democratic, constitutional, and liberal theory.
Tomiko BROWN-NAGIN has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Fall Term 2009. Her teaching program will consist of Legal Profession: Ethics in Public Interest Law; the seminar Education Law and Policy; and the reading group Critical Perspectives on the Law: Issues of Race, Gender, and Social Change (co-taught with Lani Guinier). Brown-Nagin is Professor of Law, Professor of History, and the F. Palmer Weber Research Professor in Civil Liberties and Human Rights at the University of Virginia School of Law. Her teaching and research interests include constitutional law, legal history, affirmative action, civil rights, education law, public interest law, race, remedies, school choice, and social movements.
Paolo G. CAROZZA has been appointed Visiting Associate Professor of Law for the Spring Term 2009. His teaching program will consist of the course Comparative Law: Introduction to the European Legal Tradition and the reading group International Human Rights and Domestic Law in the Inter-American System.
Daniel COQUILLETTE has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the academic year 2008-09, to teach the seminar Legal History: American Legal Education (2 credits) in the Spring Term 2008. Coquillette is the J. Donald Monan, S.J. University Professor at Boston College School of Law, where he teaches courses in legal history and professional responsibility. He also is the director of the Harvard Law School History Project.
Lori Fisler DAMROSCH has been appointed Visitor Professor of Law for the Sprint Term 2009. Her teaching program will consist of the course International Law and the reading group Law and Non-Proliferation. Damrosch is the Henry L. Moses Professor of International Law and Organization at Columbia Law School. Her teaching and research interests include: public international law and the United States law of foreign relations.
Grainne de BURCA has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Fall Term 2008. Her teaching program will consist of the course European Union Law and the seminar European Human Rights Law. De Burca is Professor of Law at Fordham University School of Law. Her fields include European Union institutional and substantive law, with particular emphasis on constitutional issues; EU and transnational governance; and European human rights law.Walter E. DELLINGER, III has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the academic year 2008-09 to co-teach, with Jonathan Hacker and Pamela Harris, the course Supreme Court and Appellate Practice clinic. Dellinger is the Douglas Blount Maggs Professor of Law at Duke Law School and a partner with the law firm of O'Melveny & Myers, LLP in Washington, DC.
Bala DHARAN has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the academic year 2008-09. He will teach the module Introduction to Accounting and Corporate Financial Reports in the Fall Term 2008 and the module Financial Statement Analysis: Getting Behind the Numbers in the Spring Term 2009. Dharan is the J. Howard Creekmore Professor of Accounting at the Jones Graduate School of Management at Rice University. His teaching and research interests include: fiancial reporting, corporate governance, investment analysis, and business valuation.
Jeffrey L. DUNOFF has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the 2008-09 academic year. His teaching program will consist of the course International Trade in the Fall Term 2008, and a first-year section of Public International Law and the seminar Challenges in Global Economic Governance in the Spring Term 2009. Dunoff is the Charles Klein Professor of Law and Government at Temple University School of Law. His teaching and research interests include: public international law, international regulatory regimes, and interdisciplinary approaches to international law.
Cynthia ESTLUND has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Fall Term 2008, to teach the course Employment Law. Estlund is the Catherine A. Rein Professor of Law at New York University School of Law. Her research and teaching fields include: employment law; labor law; and labor standards and the regulation of work.
David ESTLUND has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Winter Term 2009. He will co-teach (with Corey Brettschneider) the course Democratic Theory and Law. Estlund is Professor of Philosophy at Brown University. His teaching and research interests include: ethics, liberalism, justice, and democracy.
Liufang FANG has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Winter Term 2009, to co-teach (with Yuanyuan Shen) the course Law and China Advanced. Fang is Dean of China University of Political Science and Law. His research focuses on comparative constitutional law, corporate law, legal history and legal education.
William FORBATH has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Spring Term 2009, to teach a section of the course Constitutional Law: Separation of Powers, Federalism, and the Fourteeth Amendment. Forbath holds the Lloyd M. Bentsen Chair at the University of Texas School of Law, where he teaches and researches in the fields of legal and constitutional history and civil procedure.
Jacob GERSEN has been appointed Visiting Assistant Professor of Law for the Spring Term 2009. His teaching program will consist of the course Legislation and the reading group Law of Disasters. Gersen is Assistant Professor of Law at the University of Chicago Law School. His teaching and research interests include: administrative law, legislation, environmental law, torts, law and politics, and risk and risk regulation.
Robert GLAUBER has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Spring Term 2009, to co-teach (with Hal Scott) the course Capital Markets Regulation. Glauber is Adjunct Lecturer in Public Policy at the Kennedy School of Government. Prior to joing KSG, he was Chairman and CEO of the National Association of Securities Dealers. His research interests focus on the regulation of financial institutions and markets and on corporate governance issues.
Richard J. GOLDSTONE has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Fall Term 2008. His teaching program will consist of the course Comparative Constitutional Law: South Africa's Bill of Rights and the seminar International Criminal Law. Goldstone served as Justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa from July 1994 to October 2003. From August 1994 to September 1996, he served as the Chief Prosecutor of the United Nations International Criminal Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda. From August 1999 until December 2001 he was the chairperson of the International Independent Inquiry on Kosovo that was established by Swedish Prime Minister Goran Persson. In April 2004, he was appointed by the Secretary-General of the United Nations to the Independent International Committee, chaired by Paul Volcker, to investigate the Iraq Oil for Food program.
Dieter GRIMM has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Fall Term 2008, to co-teach (with Frank Michelman) the seminar German Constitutional Law. Grimm is Professor of Law at Humboldt University Berlin. Prior to joining the Humboldt faculty, Grimm served for 12 years as Justice of the Federal Consitutional Court of Germany.
Samuel ISSACHAROFF has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Fall Term 2008, to teach a section of Civil Procedure. Issacharoff is the Bonnie and Richard Reiss Professor of Constitutional Law at New York University School of Law where his research and teaching focus on the areas of civil procedure and complex litigation; comparative constitutional governance; and class action practice in the U.S.
John L JACKSON, Jr. has been appointed Visiting Associate Professor of Law for the Fall Term 2008, to co-teach (with Noah Feldman) the course Race, Religion and Law. Jackson is University Associate Professor of Communication and Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania. His teaching and research interests include: ethnographic methods in media analysis, the impact of mass media on urban life, mediamaking as a form of community-building and proselytizing among religious organizations, and globalization and the remaking of ethnic/racial diasporas.
Derek P. JINKS has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Winter Term 2009, to teach International Humanitarian Law. Jinks is Marrs McLean Professor of Law at the University of Texas at Austin School of Law, where he teaches and researches in the fields of public international law, international human rights, humanitarian law, criminal law, and international criminal law.
Dan M. KAHAN has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Spring Term 2009. He will teach a section of Criminal Law and a reading group to be determined. Kahan is the Elizabeth K. Dollard Professor of Law at Yale Law School. His teaching and research interests include: criminal law, evidence, risk perception, and Supreme Court advocacy.
Michael S. KANG has been appointed Visiting Associate Professor of Law for the Spring Term 2009. His teaching program will consist of the course Election Law: The Law of Democracy and the reading group Readings in Election Law Theory. Kang is Associate Professor of Law at Emory University Law School. His teaching and research focus on issues of election law, political science, and corporate law, including voting rights, race, redistricting, and direct democracy.
David KENNEDY has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Fall Term 2008. Kennedy is the Vice President for International Affairs; University Professor of Law; and David and Marianna Fisher Professor of International Relations at Brown University.
Richard LAZARUS has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the academic year 2008-09. His teaching program will consist of a section of Torts and the course Advanced Environmental Law in the Fall term 2008 and the seminar Environmental Law and the Supreme Court and a reading group to be determined in the Spring Term 2009. Lazarus is Professor of Law at Georgetown University Law Center where his teaching and research focuses on environmental law; natural resources law; Supreme Court advocacy; and environmental justice.
Benjamin LEFF has been appointed Visiting Assistant Professor of Law for the 2008-09 academic year. He will teach the course Taxation: Estate and Gift in the Fall Term 2008 and the course Taxation in the Spring Term 2009. Leff has a J.D. from Yale Law School and was most recently an associate at Vinson & Elkins LLP in their tax group.
Gillian LESTER has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the 2008-09 academic year. Her teaching program will consist of a section of Contracts in the Fall term 2008, the course Employment Law in the Spring Term 2009, and a reading group term and subject to be determined. Lester is Professor of Law at the University of California, Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law. Her teaching and research interests include: employment law, employment policy, trade secrets, paid family leave, unemployment insurance, and contracts.
John LEUBSDORF has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Fall Term 2008, to teach a section of Civil Procedure and the reading group Lawyers in Fiction. Leubsdorf is Professor of Law and Judge Frederick B. Lacey Scholar at Rutgers School of Law Newark. His teaching and research interests include: civil procedure; evidence; law and literature; legal malpractice; and legal profession.
Sanford V. LEVINSON has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Fall Term 2008, to teach the reading group Constitutional Dictatorship. Levinson is the W. St. John Garwood and the W. St. John Garwood, Jr. Centennial Chair at the University of Texas at Austin Law School and Professor of Government at the University of Texas at Austin.
Lynn LOPUCKI has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Fall Term 2008. His teaching program will consist of the courses Commercial Law: Secured Transactions and Empirical Analysis of the Law (co-taught with Elizabeth Warren). LoPucki is the Security Pacific Bank Professor of Law at UCLA School of Law, where he researches and teaches in the areas of bankruptcy law; secured transactions; and information law.
Elizabeth MAGILL has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Spring Term 2009, to teach a section of Administrative Law and a reading group to be determined. Magill is the Joseph Weintraub-Bank of America Distinguished Professor of Law and Horace W. Goldsmith Research Professor at the University of Virginia School of Law. Her teaching and research interests include: administrative law, constitutional law, food and drug law, and separation of powers theory and doctrine.
Anup MALANI has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the 2008-09 academic year. His teaching program will consist of the course Health Care Law in the Fall Term 2008 and the Health Law Policy Workshop in the Fall Term 2008 and Spring Term 2009. Malani is Professor of Law and Aaron Director Research Scholar at the University of Chicago School of Law. He is also a Research Affiliate for the Joint Center for Poverty Research at Northwestern University and the University of Chicago. He teaches health care law, bankruptcy, and corporations. His research interests include law and economics, health economics, and corporate law and finance.
Michael W. MCCONNELL has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Winter Term 2009, to teach the course Creation of the Constitution. McConnell is a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit and Presidential Professor of Law at the S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah. His scholarship and teaching focus on constitutional law, family law, state and local government, religion and the First Amendment.
Peter MURRAY has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Winter Term 2009, to co-teach (with Ron Sullivan) in the Trial Advocacy Workshop. Murray's research interests include trial lawyer ethics and techniques; visual and demonstrative aids in evidence; and computers and law practice.
Sandile NGCOBO has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Spring Term 2009, to teach the module Social and Economic Rights.. Justice Ngcobo sits on the South African Constitutional Court and was recently the Samuel Rubin Visiting Professor of Law at Columbia Law School. He earned his LL.M. degree from HLS in 1986.
John A.E. POTTOW has been appointed Visiting Assistant Professor of Law for the Fall Term 2008. His teaching program will consist of a section of Contracts and the reading group International Bankruptcy. Pottow is Assistant Professor of Law at the University of Michigan Law School. His teaching and research interests include: regulation of cross-border insolvencies, secured transactions, and law and economics.
Claire PRIEST has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Winter Term 2009, to teach Law, Institutions and Development in Early America. Priest is Professor of Law at Northwestern University School of Law. She teaches and researches in the fields of property, American legal history, contracts, and remedies.
Jim ROSSI has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Spring Term 2009. His teaching program will consist of a section of Administrative Law and the course Energy Law. Rossi is the Harry M. Walborsky Professor of Law and Associate Dean for Research at Florida State University College of Law. His teaching and research interests include: environmental law, administrative law, antitrust, energy law, regulated industries, and torts.
Tanina ROSTAIN has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Winter Term 2009, to teach the course Legal Profession: Legal Ethics in Corporate Practice. Rostain is Professor of Law and Co-Director of the Center for Professional Values and Practice at New York Law School. Her teaching and research interests include: legal profession, legal ethics, and evidence.
Kirk J. STARK has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Fall Term 2008. He will teach a section of Taxation and the reading group Inequality and Tax Policy. Stark is Professor of Law at the University of California at Los Angeles School of Law. His teaching and research interests include: federal income taxation, taxation and distributive justice, financing state and local government, and property.
Michael STEIN has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Spring Term 2009, to co-teach (with Martha Field) the course Disability Law. Stein is Professor of Law at William & Mary Marshall-Wythe School of Law, where he teaches courses and researches in the fields of bioethics; civil procedure; disability law; employment discrimination; legal history; and torts.
Eric TALLEY has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the 2008-09 academic year. His teaching program will consist of the course Corporate Finance in the Fall Term 2008, a section of Corporations and the seminar Corporate Law and Finance in the Spring Term 2009. Talley is Professor of Law and Co-Director, Berkeley Center for Law, Business, and the Economy, at the University of California, Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law. His teaching and research interests include: corporate law, mergers and acquisitions, and law and economics.
Randall THOMAS has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Winter Term 2009, to teach a section of Corporations. Thomas is the John S. Beasley II Professor of Law and Business at Vanderbilt University Law School. His teaching and research interests include: corporate law, securities law, shareholder activism, executive compensation, and corporate voting.
Daniel P. TOKAJI has been appointed Visiting Associate Professor of Law for the Fall Term 2008. His teaching program will consist of the course Federal Courts and the Federal System and the reading group Election Law and Administration. Tokaji is Associate Professor of Law at Ohio State University/Moritz College of Law. His teaching and research interests include civil procedure, the law of democracy, civil rights, freedom of speech, disability rights, and federal courts.
Alain VERBEKE has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Winter and Spring Terms 2009, to teach in the Negotiation Workshop. Verbeke is Professor of Law at the University of Leuven, Belgium and the University of Tilburg, the Netherlands. His teaching and research interests include Negotiation, Contracts and Estate Planning.
Daniel R. WILLIAMS has been appointed as Visiting Associate Professor of Law for the Spring Term 2009, to teach a course on death penalty law. Williams is Associate Professor of Law at Northeastern University School of Law. His teaching and research interests include: criminal law, criminal procedure, and evidence.
David A. WIRTH has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Winter Term 2009, to teach the course International Environmental Law. Wirth is Professor of Law at Boston College Law School. His areas of research and teaching include public international law, environmental law, and administrative law.
Benjamin ZIPURSKY has been appointed Visiting Professor of Law for the Spring Term 2009. His teaching program will consist of a section of Torts and the reading group Supreme Court Torts. Zipursky is Professor of Law at Fordham University School of Law. His teaching and research focus on torts, defamation and privacy, jurisprudence, and products liability.

James A. BAKER has been appointed Lecturer on Law for the Fall Term 2008, to teach a seminar National Security Law. Baker serves as Counsel for Intelligence Policy in the Office of Intelligence Policy and Review, United States Department of Justice.
Carol BALL has been appointed Lecturer on Law for the for the Winter Term 2009. She will teach Trial Advocacy Workshop (3 credits). Ball is a Justice of the Massachusetts Superior Court.
Mark D. BECKETT has been appointed Lecturer on Law for the Winter Term 2009. He will co-teach (with Dan Tan) the course International Commercial Arbitration. Beckett is partner in Latham & Watkins LLP's New York office. He is co-chair of the firm's International Litigation and Arbitration practice and has broad experience in the resolution of complex international disputes through arbitration, litigation, mediation and negotiation.
Roger BERTLING has been appointed Lecturer on Law for the 2008-09 academic year. He will teach the clinical workshop Predatory Lending/Consumer Protection in the Fall Term 2008 and in the Spring Term 2009 and co-teach with Kimberly Breger the seminar Consumer Law and Policy in the Fall Term 2008. Bertling is a Clinical Instructor in the Predatory Lending/Consumer Protection Clinic at the WilmerHale Legal Services Center.
Jacqueline BHABHA has been appointed Lecturer on Law for the 2008-09 academic year. She will teach the course International Childhood, Rights, and Globalization in the Fall Term 2008 and the course Human Rights, State Sovereignty, and Persecution: Issues in Forced Migration in the Spring Term 2009. Bhabha is the Executive Director of the Harvard University Committee on Human Rights Studies, and an Adjunct Lecturer in Public Policy at the Kennedy School.
Martin BIENENSTOCK has been appointed Lecturer on Law for the Spring Term 2009, to teach the course Corporate Reorganization. Bienenstock is a partner with Dewey & LeBoeuf LLP in New York. His practice concentrates on corporate goverance and reorganization.
Sheldon BONOVITZ has been appointed Lecturer on Law for the Spring Term 2009, to teach the course Culture and Growth in the Large Law Firm. Bonovitz is Chairman Emeritus of Duane Morris LLP in Philadelphia. He practices in the areas of taxation and corporate law, with an emphasis on mergers and acquisitions.
Michael BOUDIN has been appointed Lecturer on Law for the Fall Term 2008, to teach the course Antitrust Law. Boudin is a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Frist Circuit.
Kimberly BREGER has been appointed Lecturer on Law for the Fall Term 2008. She will co-teach (with Roger Bertling) the seminar Consumer Law and Policy. Breger is a Senior Clinical Fellow at the WilmerHale Legal Services Center.
Stephanie BREWER has been appointed Lecturer on Law for the Winter Term 2009, to co-teach (with Jim Cavallaro) the course Doctrine and Practice of the Inter-American Human Rights System. Brewer is currently a Henigson Fellow working in Mexico City as a human rights lawyer specializing in litigating before the Inter-American court system.
Jessica BUDNITZ has been appointed Lecturer on Law for the Spring Term 2009, to teach the Child Advocacy Clinic. Budnitz is the Administrative Director of the Child Advocacy Program and Founding Director of Juvenile Justice Partners in Cambridge.
Philip BURLING has been appointed Lecturer on Law for the 2008-09 academic year. He will teach a section of Advanced Legal Writing in the Fall Term and a section of Advanced Legal Writing in the Spring Term. Burling is a retired partner in the firm of Foley Hoag LLP in Boston, where his practice focused on schools and colleges, property valuation disputes, medical groups, and administrative litigation.
Peter CARFAGNA has been appointed Lecturer on Law for the 2008-09 academic year. He will teach Sports and the Law: Introduction in the Fall Term 2008 and Sports Law: Representing the Professional Athelete and the seminar Sports and the Law: Representing Advanced Contract Drafting in the Spring Term 2009. Carfagna is a partner with Calfee, Halter & Griswold LLP in Cleveland, Ohio. His practice focuses on litigation, government relations, and complex business transactions.
Dale CENDALI has been appointed Lecturer on Law for the Fall Term 2008, to teach the course Trademark and Copyright Litigation: TRO to the Supreme Court. Cendali is a partner resident in O'Melveny & Myers LLP's New York office, Chair of the New York Intellectual Property and Technology Practice, and firm-wide Chair of the Copyright, Trademark, and Internet subpractice. She is a nationally recognized leader in the field of intellectual property litigation.
Steve CHURCHILL has been appointed Lecturer on Law for the academic year 2007-08, to teach an Employment clinical workshop (2 credits) in the Fall Term 2007 and an Employment Civil Rights clinical workshop (2 credits) in the Spring Term 2008. Churchill is a Clinical Instructor in the Employment Law Clinic of the Health, Employment, Living Legacy and Planning Practice Unit at the Wilmer Hale Legal Services Center.
Laurent COHEN-TANUGI has been appointed Lecturer on Law for the Spring Term 2009, to teach the module Transatlantic Mergers and Acquisitions. Cohen-Tanugi is a Paris-based international lawyer, specializing in cross-border mergers and acquisitions and international arbitration. He was a partner of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP until October, 2007, when he was appointed by the French government to lead a task-force on the future of the EU Lisbon Strategy for Growth and Employment.
Susan COLE has been appointed Lecturer on Law for the academic year 2008-09.
