International Legal Studies

Speakers and Events

HLS students often comment that there are so many compelling events on the HLS campus that it is possible to go to a different session every day with distinguished international legal scholars and practitioners. Some are here for a semester or year as visiting faculty or researchers, but many more come for shorter visits. Yet visitors to HLS do more than just sweep into town for high-profile lectures. These visitors stay and help teach classes; or present their research, often in collaboration with a Harvard law professor; or host small, substantive lunch-time discussions; or offer career advice and political opinions.

Events can take many forms — lectures, small group discussions, panels, colloquia, debates — but they always provide an opportunity to enhance our understanding of how law is practiced and applied around the world. For example, Roberto Danino (LL.M. '75), General Counsel of the World Bank and Former Prime Minister of Peru, met with students interested in finance for law and development, and participated in a seminar on international banking and finance. In a visit to HLS, Rita Hauser (member of the class of '58), former United Nations Ambassador and Chair of the International Peace Academy, tackled the question of whether United Nations reform is really possible. And Martti Koskenniemi, Professor of International Law, University of Helsinki, and member of the International Law Commission (UN), led a roundtable on Karl Schmitt's The Concept of the Political. As well, many fascinating sessions such as the S.J.D. workshops are organized by HLS students.
