Agenda for Justice: A Canadian Point of View
Prof. Cotler's talk will draw on his experience as Canadian justice minister and Attorney General and will include such themes as the terrorism-rights relationship, Supreme Court appointments, and combating racism, intolerance, and mass atrocities. First elected in 1999, Hon. Irwin Cotler is currently a Member of Parliament in the Montreal district of Mount Royal. He served as Minister of Justice and Attorney General from 2003-06. Prior to entering politics, he was a Professor of Law at McGill and a prominent human rights advocate, serving as counsel to such political prisoners as Nelson Mandela and Andrei Sakharov. For the past twenty years, he has also been deeply involved in initiatives for Middle East peace.

One of Switzerland's premier foreign servants, Ambassador Staehelin acted as the first Swiss Ambassador on Special Mission to the Holly See followed by accreditation as Ambassador of Switzerland to Japan. After Switzerland’s accession to the United Nations in September 2002, he became the first Permanent Representative of Switzerland to the United Nations, a function he assumed until his retirement in September 2004. Ambassador Staehelin received an LL.M. from Harvard Law School and he is a member of the Advisory Board of the Dean of Harvard Law School.
