Arthur T. von Mehren
Arthur von Mehren is Joseph Story Professor of Law, Emeritus. He has taught throughout the world at such institutions as the University of Tokyo; the Indian Law Institute, New Delhi; the University of Frankfurt; the Universities of Paris I and II; the University of Cambridge, England; the Hague Academy of International Law; and others. He was an editor (1952-1986) of the American Journal of Comparative Law and is a member of the Editorial Committee of the International Encyclopedia of Comparative Law. For many years, Arthur has been a member of the State Department's Advisory Committee on Private International Law. As a member of the U.S. Delegation to the Conference working on a convention on international jurisdiction and the effects of foreign judgments in civil and commercial matters, he witnessed its completion and acceptance during Summer 2005. He was the principal draftsman and negotiator for the United States in negotiations with the United Kingdom beginning in 1973 for a bilateral convention on the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments. From 1987-1990 he advised the Puerto Rican Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation on a proposed codification of Puerto Rican private international law. On many occasions he has advised in litigations with international aspects and served as an arbitrator in numerous international commercial arbitrations. He is fluent in French and German and has a working knowledge of Italian. Arthur is the author or editor of seven books and in 2002 published Theory and Practice of Adjudicatory Authority in Private International Law: A Comparative Sunday of the Doctrine, Policies and Practices of Common- and Civil-Law Systems, which was awarded the Canada Prize for the best comparative law publication.
