Third Floor Construction Complete

As of August 24th, construction on the the North side of Langdell three is largely complete and the space is again open for patron use. Its transformation from a stack area to an attractive study space bordered by beautiful new faculty offices is complete.

What happened?

Over the summer, the stack area housing part of the state law collection was dismantled and the room completely renovated to include nine new faculty offices and a faculty support space as well as an airy central study alcove accommodating two rows of carrels.

Other portions of the space, including the copy machine, water fountain, bathrooms and lockers remain unchanged and should return to service shortly as the final cleanup of the area is completed. Access to the, now consolidated, state law collection at the far North end of the floor is now possible, once again, from the elevator lobby on 3.

Where are the state materials?

The state materials have been consolidated to the stack area at the far north end of level three. The bulk of the State Reporter collection has been transferred to the Harvard Depository. Consult the holdings record for a particular item to determine if it is on 3 or has been moved to the depository. Materials at the depository can be retrieved within 24-hours.

Final Notes

Overall, we are very pleased with both the design and feel of the new space. Woodwork and fittings were carefully selected to match the look and tone of the rest of Langdell Hall. The architects were able to accommodate the perimeter faculty offices while still allowing natural light to reach the central study area. In the ceiling, existing piping and ductwork were rerouted to allow the space to be as open as possible. The result is a pleasant, comfortable area that we hope will serve the needs of both faculty and students for many years to come.

Our apologies to patrons who were inconvenienced by the summer's construction. Thank you for being patient as we completed this significant reconfiguration.

Any problems with the new space (lights, power or data jacks not working; issues with the furniture, etc.) should be reported to the main circulation desk. We will work to address any such issues as quickly as possible. Comments about the new space can also be directed to the library's general email account. Thank you again for your patience as we put the finishing touches on this great new area.
