10 Tips for Using the HOLLIS Catalog
- Start your search with the HOLLIS Catalog. Ask Reference staff if you haven't found what you want within 10 minutes.
- Use your PIN with Your Account for items checked out, renewed, and requested. Logout when you finish your HOLLIS session so that others cannot view your personal account information.
- The four HOLLIS Catalog databases are:
- Full Catalog,
- Journals subset of Full Catalog,
- Digital Resources subset of Full Catalog, a more complete list of electronic resources than the E-Research section of the Harvard Libraries site,
- Reserves includes Law School course reserves.
- Three search types in each database are:
- Search: Browse an Alphabetical List or do a Keyword search;
- Expanded Search: Combine and limit key words and phrases; and
- Command Search: Scroll down to see the commonly used commands and link to a complete list of commands.
- If you have made selections from a result list (by checking individual list items) be sure to click the Add To List button before you leave that results screen. Otherwise you will lose the selections that you marked.
- View and download or e-mail HOLLIS records in several formats, described on the Save/Mail this Record screen.
- Display, Delete, and Combine your Previous Searches.
- Help at the top of each screen opens an explanation of databases, search
types, Boolean connectors, a glossary of catalog jargon, and detailed search
and export instructions. Context sensitive tips (
) appear
throughout. - Click on the (
) information
icon next to a library name for hours, phone numbers, and Web sites of Harvard
libraries. - Come to the Reference Desk for walkup HOLLIS Catalog training - including an introduction to the Harvard Libraries site - Wednesdays at 2:00 and Thursdays at 11:30.
