American FactFinder

American FactFinder is the primary census data dissemination site from the U.S. Bureau of the Census. American FactFinder allows you to browse, search, and map data from the 1990 & 2000 Decennial Census, 2000-2003 American Community Survey, Annual Population Estimates, 1997 & 2002 Economic Censuses, and Annual Economic Surveys. The American FactFinder tools allow you to generate U.S. population, housing, economic and geographic data. American FactFinder also provides access to international data and links to national statistics agencies.

Bank for International Settlements International Financial Statistics

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) is an international organization which fosters international monetary and financial cooperation and serves as a bank for central banks. The BIS fulfils this mandate by acting as: a forum to promote discussion and facilitate decision-making processes among central banks and within the international financial community; a center for economic and monetary research; a prime counter party for central banks in their financial transactions; and agent or trustee in connection with international financial operations. The BIS is located in Basel, Switzerland and was established in May 1930, making it the oldest international financial organization in the world.

Budget of the United States Government

The Budget of the United States Government, issued by the Office of Management and Budget, is a collection of documents that contains the budget message of the President, information about the President's budget proposals for a given fiscal year, and other budgetary publications that have been issued throughout the fiscal year. Other related and supporting budget publications, such as the Economic Report of the President, are included, which may vary from year to year. Bureau of Economic Analysis

The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) of the U.S. Department of Commerce provides regional, national and international statistics including GDP, GSP, state and personal income, balance of payments, international trade, foreign direct investment. Industry-level statistics are available, including input-output accounts and capital flow. The BEA also includes an interactive data link allowing you to create data-specific tables or choose from pre-formatted tables. The monthly journal, Survey of Current Business, is available in pdf format.

CANSIM II

CANSIM II, the Canadian Socio-Economic Information Management System, contains over 18 million time series, spanning a wide range of subject areas: agriculture, arts, culture and recreation, business enterprises, communication, construction, education, energy, environment, government, health, justice, labor, manufacturing, national accounts, personal finance and household finance, population and demography, prices and price indexes, primary industries, science and technology, service industries, social conditions, trade, transport and warehousing, and travel and tourism. Census Bureau Economic Programs

The U.S. Census Bureau serves as the leading source of data about the people and economy of the United States. In addition to taking a census of the population every 10 years, the Census Bureau conducts censuses of economic activity and state and local governments every five years. The Census Bureau conducts more than 100 other surveys every year. The sole purpose of the censuses and surveys is to collect general statistical information from individuals and establishments in order to compile statistics. U.S. Census Bureau Economic Programs provides access to the latest economic indicator as well as economic statistics by geography, sector and frequency.

China Data Online

China Data Online provides statistical information from the National Bureau of Statistics of the People's Republic of China in English. Coverage includes China Yearly Macro-economy Statistics (1949-), China Monthly Macro-economy Statistics (1998-), Monthly Reports on Economy Development (2002-), China City Statistics (1996-), China County Statistics (1997-), China Industrial Data (2001-), and various statistical yearbooks (2002-), as well as provincial and county-level data from the 2000 census. Congressional Budget Office

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) assists the House and Senate Budget Committees, and the Congress more generally, by preparing reports and analyses. In accordance with the CBO's mandate to provide objective and impartial analysis, CBO's reports contain no policy recommendations. In late January of each year, CBO reports on the economic and budget outlook, including estimates of spending and revenue levels for the next 10 years under current law. This so-called budget baseline serves as a neutral benchmark against which Members of Congress can measure the budgetary effect of proposed legislation. Each year CBO provides an independent re-estimate of the President's budget proposals. This analysis is delivered to the Congress approximately one month after the President submits his budget. It permits the Congress to compare the President's spending or revenue proposals to other proposals using a consistent set of economic and technical assumptions. CBO analyzes specific policy and program issues related to the budget. Such studies explore significant budgetary and economic issues in greater depth.

CountryData.com

CountryData.com, also know as the Political Risk Service, provides political risk data from the PRS Group drawn from two risk methodologies: Political Risk Services and the International Country Risk Guide. CountryData.com provides over 75 country risk-related variables including political, economic, financial and government stability. CountryData.com also includes domestic and international economic indicators, social indicators, ICRG Risk Ratings and Coplin-O'Leary Forecasts. Risk assessment data is available in either a country report format or the International Country Risk Guide, which allows for the comparison of risk data between countries. Doing Business

Doing Business, produced by the World Bank, provides objective measures of business regulations and their enforcement. The Doing Business indicators are comparable across 175 economies. They indicate the regulatory costs of business and can be used to analyze specific regulations that enhance or constrain investment, productivity and growth. Economic Indicators

Economic Indicators is compiled monthly for the Joint Economic Committee by the Council of Economic Advisors and provides economic information on prices, wages, production, business activity, purchasing power, credit, money and Federal finance. Economic Indicators.gov, produced by the the Economics and Statistics Administration at the U.S. Department of Commerce, provides timely access to the daily releases of key economic indicators from the Bureau of Economic Analysis and the U.S. Census Bureau. Economic Indicators.gov offers a free email or fax subscription service to economic indicators as soon as they are released.

Economic Research Service (USDA)

The Economic Research Service, the source of economic information and research in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, conducts research, analyzes food and commodity markets, produces policy studies, and develops economic and statistical indicators to inform public and private decision making on economic and policy issues involving food, farming, natural resources, and rural development.

Economic Report of the President

The Economic Report of the President is an annual report written by the Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors. It overviews the nation's economic progress using text and extensive data appendices. The Economic Report of the President is transmitted to Congress no later than ten days after the submission of the Budget of the United States Government. Supplementary reports can be issued to the Congress which contain additional and/or revised recommendations. EIU Country Commerce

EIU Country Commerce, produced by the Economist Intelligence Unit, provides operating conditions, commercial laws, and business regulations of approximately 60 countries worldwide. EIU Country Finance

EIU Country Reports

EIU Country Reports, produced by the Economist Intelligence Unit, provides quarterly analysis and forecasts of the political, economic and business environment in nearly 200 countries. Included in each Country Report is a detailed review and analysis of political and economic events, a compilation of the latest economic indicators as well as a 12-24 month political outlook and economic projection. Energy Information Administration (U.S. Department of Energy)

The Energy Information Administration, a statistical agency of the U.S. Department of Energy, provides policy-independent data, forecasts, and analyses to promote sound policy making, efficient markets, and public understanding regarding energy and its interaction with the economy and the environment.

Eurostat

Eurostat is the statistical agency for the EU. The site provides access to data (monthly, quarterly, and annual data) from 1960 onwards. Topics include: general statistics, regional statistics, economy and finance, population and social conditions, industry, services and transport, and intra- extra-EU trade statistics.

FAOSTAT
FAO Statistics

FAOSTAT, produced by FAO, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, contains over over 1 million time-series records from over 210 countries and territories covering statistics on agriculture, nutrition, fisheries, forestry, food aid, land use and population. The data can be broadly classified into three groups: country-level data; derived data; and data that are derived by, or in collaboration with, other international agencies. FDIC Bank Data & Statistics

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) preserves and promotes public confidence in the U.S. financial system by insuring deposits in banks and thrift institutions for up to $100,000; by identifying, monitoring and addressing risks to the deposit insurance funds; and by limiting the effect on the economy and the financial system when a bank or thrift institution fails. An independent agency of the federal government, the FDIC was created in 1933 in response to the thousands of bank failures that occurred in the 1920s and early 1930s.

The Federal Reserve System is the central bank of the United States. It was founded by Congress in 1913 to provide the nation with a safer, more flexible, and more stable monetary and financial system. The Federal Reserve System is made up of a Board of Governors, based in Washington, D.C., and twelve regional Reserve Banks. Federal Reserve economists produce numerous working papers and are among the leading contributors at professional meetings and in major journals. Federal Reserve economists also produce a wide variety of economic analyses and forecasts. The Division of Research and Statistics is responsible for developing and presenting economic and financial data and analysis. The Division of Monetary Affairs is responsible for research and analysis in the areas of finance, money and banking, and monetary policy design and implementation. The Division also provides expertise on open market operations, discount window policy, and reserve markets. The Division of International Finance is responsible for basic research, policy analysis, and reporting in the areas of foreign economic activity, U.S. external trade and capital flows, and developments in international financial markets and institutions.

Federal Reserve System Reserve Banks

Federal Reserve Banks were established by Congress as the operating arms of the nation's central banking system. Each Federal Reserve Bank has a research staff to gather and analyze a wide range of economic data and to interpret conditions and developments in the economy. The twelve regional Reserve Banks are: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Kansas City, Minneapolis, New York, Philadelphia, Richmond, San Francisco and St. Louis. The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis produces FRASER, the Federal Reserve Archival System for Economic Research and FRED, Federal Reserve Economic Data.

FRASER

FRASER, the Federal Reserve Archival System for Economic Research, consists of over 40 thousand pages of historical economic statistical publications, releases, and documents. The goal of FRASER is to contribute to the quality of scientific economic research through the creation of a public electronic archive of economic statistical publications and data. FRASER consists of an archive of economic statistical publications and an automated system to retrieve both images and data. Within the archive is an image library of economic statistical publications and the data extracted from those publications. The FRASER database is designed to retain information linking each data point to its source publication, including the date of publication. The automated data retrieval system has been developed to allow users to select any desired subset of FRASER’s images and data. FRASER is produced by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.

FRED

FRED, Federal Reserve Economic Data, is a database of over 3,000 U.S. economic time series. FRED allows you to download data in Microsoft Excel and text formats and view charts of data series. FRED is produced by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.

Global Development Finance Online

Global Development Finance Online (GDF Online) offers external debt and financial flow data for the 136 countries that report public and publicly-guaranteed debt to the World Bank's Debtor Reporting System. The time series for 218 indicators run from 1970 to 2000, with contractual obligations data until 2010. The indicators include external debt stocks and flows, major economic aggregates, and key debt ratios as well as average terms of new commitments, currency composition of long-term debt, debt restructurings, and scheduled debt service projections. GDF Online includes GDF Country and Summary Data 2002, advance release, in PDF format. This publication includes topical country data and regional aggregates showing time series in table and chart form. The topics are: external debt, aggregate net resource flows (long term), net flows and transfers on debt, net financial flows from multilateral institutions (for 2000), and international bond issues (new and outstanding). Human Development Report

The Human Development Report, produced by the United Nations Development Programme, contains statistics relating to the social, demographic, environment, health, education and economics development of people and countries throughout the world. The Human Development Index is the most widely recognized index within the report, but the report also contains the Gender-related Development Index, the Gender Empowerment Measure, and the Human Poverty Index. Data are available in both pdf and xls formats.

Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) at a Glance Tables (World Bank)

ICT at a Glance Tables provide key data on information and communications technologies, with sections on ICT infrastructure & access, Computers and the Internet, ICT expenditures, and ICT business & government environment. ICT at a Glance tables compile data from several sources, including the UNESCO Institute for Statistics, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), World Information Technology and Services Alliance (WITSA), World Economic Forum (WEF), Netcraft and the World Bank.

International Financial Statistics Online

International Financial Statistics Online, produced by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) , contains time series data from 1948 to the present. IFS Online provides access to approximately 32,000 time series covering more than 200 countries and areas and includes all series appearing on the IFS Country Pages; exchange rate series for all Fund member countries, plus Aruba and the Netherlands Antilles; major Fund accounts series; and most other world, area, and country series from the IFS World Tables. The Monthly Bulletin of Statistics Online, produced by the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSTAT), presents current monthly economic statistics for most of the countries and areas of the world. National Agricultural Statistics Service (USDA)

The National Agricultural Statistics Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, conducts surveys and prepares reports covering all aspects of U.S. agriculture including production and supplies of food and fiber, prices paid and received by farmers, farm labor and wages, farm finances, chemical use, and changes in the demographics of U.S. producers.

National Science Foundation Science Resources Statistics

The National Science Foundation division of Science Resources Statistics, a central clearinghouse for the collection, interpretation, and analysis of data on scientific and engineering resources, provides information for policy formulation by agencies of the Federal Government. Science Resources Statistics designs, supports, and directs about 11 periodic surveys as well as a variety of other data collections and research projects.

OECD Statistics Portal

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) groups 30 member countries sharing a commitment to democratic government and the market economy. With active relationships with some 70 other countries, NGOs and civil society, it has a global reach. Best known for its publications and its statistics, its work covers economic and social issues from macroeconomics, to trade, education, development and science and innovation. Statistics underpin the whole fabric of the OECD's analytical work, so their accuracy and timeliness are vital to the Organization's reputation for quality. The Statistics Directorate collects economic statistics from across the OECD. These are standardized to make them internationally comparable.

Statistical Abstract of the United States

The Statistical Abstract of the United States, published annually by the U.S. Census Bureau, provides statistics on social and economic conditions in the United States. A section Statistical Abstract volumes are available in pdf format from 1878 to the present. The Bicentennial Edition: Historical Statistics of the United States, Colonial Times to 1970 is also available in pdf format. on Comparative International Statistics includes information on finance, agriculture, population, communication and military affairs. Supplemental features include USA Statistics in Brief; Mini Historical Statistics; State Rankings; Key Federal Statistical Agency Reports; and a Guide to State Statistical Abstracts; as well as collections of tables on selected topics: Black, African American Population; American Indian, Alaska Native Population; Asian Population; Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander Population; Asian, Pacific Islander Population; and Hispanic or Latino Origin Population. UNECE Common Statistical Database

The UNECE Common Statistical Database, maintained by the Statistical Division of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, presents a structured set of economic indicators for countries of the UNECE region. The statistics provided are the empirical basis for the Economic Survey of Europe and other analyses carried out by the Secretariat of the Economic Commission for Europe. Emphasis has been placed on making the data ready for international comparison and immediate analytical use, as well as on making them easy to find. Users may be particularly interested in the statistics on CIS and central and eastern European countries, which are difficult to find elsewhere in a single integrated database. Data are updated on a daily basis and the content will progressively be increased to cover more domains. The UNECE Common Statistical Database provides access to data structured in a way to facilitate retrieval of statistics by end-users. Organized by subject or policy areas, and by product line, multi-dimensional tables present data by country, by various socio-economic classifications related to the context, and by time period. United Nations Commodity Trade Statistics Database

The United Nations Commodity Trade Statistics Database (COMTRADE) is produced by the United Nation's Statistics Division (UNSD). Every year the UNSD receives international trade statistics from over 130 countries. This annual data is by commodity and partner country. It is processed into a standard format with consistent coding and valuation. All values are converted into U.S. dollars using exchange rates supplied by the countries, or derived from monthly market rates and volume of trade. Whenever possible, quantities are in metric units. For many countries the data coverage starts as far back as 1962 and goes up to the most recent completed year. Commodities are classified according to SITC (Rev.1 from1962, Rev.2 from 1976 and Rev.3 from 1988) and the Harmonized System (HS) (from 1988 with revisions in 1996 and 2002). Currently most data are reported according to HS, version 2002. The original data are also converted and stored in all the other classifications. (Harvard University ID and PIN required.)

United Nations Common Database

The United Nations Common Database (UNCDB) provides access to hundreds of statistical series for all countries and areas of the world. The series can be accessed alphabetically, by source (originating international organization), or by topics. Among the main data sources are the United Nations Statistics Division's own databases. These include data on merchandise trade, national accounts, demography and population, energy, status of women and industrial commodities production. There are also statistics from the Population Division, the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs' Project Link, FAO, ICAO, ILO, IMF, IPU, ITU, OECD, UNCTAD, UNEP, UNESCO, UNICEF, WHO, WIPO, World Bank and World Tourism Organization, and others. United Nations National Accounts Main Aggregates Database

The United Nations National Accounts Main Aggregates Database, maintained by Economic Statistics Branch of the United Nations Statistics Division, is the product of a global cooperation effort between the United Nations Statistics Division, international statistical agencies and the national statistical services of more than 200 countries and is in accordance with the request of the Statistical Commission that the most recent available data on national accounts of as many countries and areas as possible be published and disseminated regularly. The National Accounts Main Aggregates Database contains a complete and consistent set of time series from 1970 onwards of main national accounts aggregates for all UN Members States and all other countries and areas in the world. It is maintained and updated on the basis of annual collections of the official annual national accounts statistics supplemented by estimates of national accounts statistics for those years and countries for which the official statistics has incomplete or inconsistent information. In addition, to the values of national accounts statistics, it contains analytical indicators and ratios derived from the main national accounts aggregates related to economic structure and development.

UNSTAT Statistical Databases

The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSTAT) compiles statistics from many international sources relating to trade, national accounts, demographic and social behaviors, energy and the environment. Harvard University subscribes to two restricted access UNSTAT statistical databases: Commodity Trade Statistics Database (COMTRADE) and United Nations Common Database (UNCDB). UNSTAT provides unrestricted access to many of its statistical databases including: the Demographic Yearbook, National Accounts Main Aggregates and Social Indicators. UNSTAT provides data for use in time series research. Many of the databases contain variables from as early as 1945.

White House Economic Statistics Briefing Room

The White House Economic Statistics Briefing Room (ESBR) provides access to current federal economic indicators including links to information produced by a number of federal agencies. The information included is maintained and updated by the statistical units of those agencies. All estimates for the indicators presented are the most current values available. The ESBR includes statistics on Employment, Income, International, Money, Output, Prices, Production and Transportation.

WIDER: World Income Inequality Database

WIDER: World Income Inequality Database is the most up-to-date version of the Deininger and Squire database, originally published by the World Bank. Variables include gini coefficient and income distribution for over 150 countries throughout the world.

The World Bank is a vital source of financial and technical assistance to developing countries around the world. World Bank data and statistics are derived, either directly or indirectly, from official statistical systems organized and financed by national governments. World Bank data and statistics include Data by Country, Data by Topic, Country Classification (classification of economies), Quick Reference Tables and Maps. World Development Indicators Online

World Development Indicators Online (WDI Online) contains statistical data from the World Bank for almost 600 development indicators and time series data from 1960 for over 200 countries and 18 country groups. Data includes social, economic, financial, natural resources, and environmental indicators. Results can be scaled, indexed against a particular year, viewed by percentage change, and charted. The World Factbook, produced by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency Directorate of Intelligence, is a comprehensive resource of facts and statistics on more than 250 countries and other entities. The World Factbook was created as an annual summary and update to the National Intelligence Survey (NIS). The first classified World Factbook was published in August 1962, and the first unclassified version was published in June 1971. The NIS program was terminated in 1973 except for the World Factbook, map, and gazetteer components. The 1975 World Factbook was the first to be made available to the public with sales through the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO). The online World Factbook is updated periodically throughout the year. Previous editions of the World Factbook are available for download in zipped html format: 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004.

World Trade Organization Statistics Database

The World Trade Organization (WTO) Statistics Database provides access to the most up-to-date WTO trade statistics. Trade Profiles provides predefined information leaflets on the trade situation of members, observers and other selected economies. Time Series allows an interactive data retrieval of trade statistics.
