Requests for photocopies, microfilm, photographs, transparencies, slides, and digital scans are considered on a case-by-case basis. Permission depends upon the physical condition of the material in question, and should not be assumed in advance .
Photocopies
1. In all cases where a microfilm or facsimile edition of the material requested already exists, researchers must use these to make photocopies.
This is true even if neither the Law Library nor any other Harvard University library owns a copy of the facsimile or microfilm.
Special Collections staff will assist researchers in locating microfilm or facsimiles not owned by the University. Permission to photocopy or microfilm material is given only after it has been ascertained that a copy of the original does not exist.
2. As a general rule, we will not make photocopies of:
Books and manuscripts in early, fine, or fragile bindings
Pre-1701 manuscripts, pre-1601 printed books, and any works on vellum, regardless of date
Early photographic materials or drawings
Red Set items currently in print
Materials from the Class Notes Collection
3. For books, we will photocopy a maximum number of 20 pages per volume; copyright may require a lower number.
4. Researchers wanting over 20 pages from a single volume must order a microfilm copy (when copyright permits). The entire work must be filmed, not just the selected passages.
Photographs
We can provide black and white prints as well as color slides and transparencies. Transparencies are available for rental only.
Digital Photography and Flatbed Scanning
Scans are available in TIFF and JPG format. Color prints of scans are also available upon request.
