French Legal Research: Dictionaries

Dictionaries are an important reference source when researching the law. At the International Legal Studies section of the Harvard Law School Library, print dictionaries related to the French legal system are located, under the Moody system, at FRA 010.

There are also several dictionaries related to French legal research available on the Internet:

• Le Glossaire Juridique: This dictionary is French to French for legal terms. It is presented by the French Justice Department. There is access via a search interface or by an alphabetic listing.
• Serge Braudo's Dictionnaire Du Droit Privé: Also a French to French legal dictionary, this dictionary provides terms alphabetically listed; however, it does not offer a search feature.
• A Glossary of the European Communities and the European Union: This English to English glossary assists with understanding terminology related to the European Union. It was compiled by a professor at the University of Aberdeen.
• ARTFL Project: French-English Dictionary Form: Search form for both English to French and French to English translations from the University of Chicago.
• AltaVista translation service: Text or URL can be translated from English to French or French to English
• Principle Legal Abbreviations : Abbreviations used in french legal periodicals.
