Faculty Services Improvements

FRIDA Document Delivery Service – Expanded Hours

The Document Delivery Department has added another full-time staff person. Starting December 1, FRIDA has expanded its service hours to Sunday 1-9, Monday-Thursday 9-9 and Fridays 9-5.

Faculty Hotline – “One Stop Service” at 617-496-0569

We have dedicated a new faculty hotline, 6-0569, staffed by a reference librarian, and available sixty-one hours per week , including weekday evenings, and weekend afternoons (except during school breaks).

The hotline is designed for “one-stop shopping” – faculty members or faculty assistants with any library-related question can call one number and your questions will be answered or you'll be promptly put in touch with the right person to help you.

RA's For Hire Service – Increased Coverage

The RA's for Hire service managed by Faculty Services Librarian Janet Katz continues to offer student research assistance for short-term faculty research projects. We've improved our coverage over academic breaks and exam periods by dedicating reference assistant time to handle more of your research requests during those periods when student research assistants are unavailable. We're also working with the Admissions office to train incoming JD student RA's for work with faculty during the summer.

Increased Reference Librarian Specialization

In addition to the ILS reference librarians specializing in international, foreign and comparative law research, we recently have added specializations in clinical and pro bono program support (June Casey, Reference Librarian/Pro Bono Research Coordinator), and business and corporate research (Elizabeth Lambert, Reference Librarian/Business and Corporate Law). A new search engine and other resources to aid in identifying data sources for empirical research were recently created by Michael Jimenez, Reference Librarian/Electronic Services Coordinator. Among the growing list of areas in which specific reference librarians offer specialized research expertise are administrative law, antitrust, civil procedure, constitutional law and the Supreme Court, criminal law and procedure, intellectual property, labor and employment, legal history, legislative research, and tax . For more information, contact Karen Storin Linitz, Head of Langdell Reference, kstorin@law.harvard.edu 6-2129, or call the Hotline.

InfoAdvantage - HLS Course Sites Custom Libraries and Faculty Portals

Reference librarians are available to consult with you about the InfoAdvantage library resources made available to your students via your iSites course pages. A reference librarian has been assigned to identify the most important resources specific to virtually every course offered at HLS this year, and that librarian is available to consult with faculty members on revisions to course site materials.

In addition, librarians are available to produce a custom portal for any faculty member who wants ready access on one web page to his or her most frequently used search sites, documents, images, videos, and more. For a demonstration or more information about course pages or custom portals, please contact Karen Storin Linitz, Head of Langdell Reference, kstorin@law.harvard.edu 6-2129, or call the Hotline.

Orientation Liaison Program – For New and Visiting Faculty

New and visiting faculty will now be paired with a librarian who will orient them and set up initial library services. These orientation liaisons will be available to new faculty for their first two years at HLS.

In response to feedback from you, we are phasing out the Library's old faculty liaison program. There will be no reduction in services to faculty; on the contrary, we expect improved service due to streamlining delivery via the new Hotline. This phasing out should not affect existing productive faculty-librarian relationships; faculty members are welcome to continue to contact any individual librarian directly.
