On Friday, January 7, beginning promptly at 12:30 pm, the East Asian Legal Studies program is hosting a panel discussion focusing on the catastrophic events following the earthquake and tsunami in Asia. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Ames Courtroom in Austin Hall.

Professor William Alford, vice dean for international legal studies, helped organize the panel as a way "to better understand the terrible events of December 26 and their aftermath and, more practically, to focus on what can we do to be of help."

Alford will moderate the event, which will include the following panelists:

  • Andal Radhakrishnan, a native of Sri Lanka and currently an LL.M. student at Harvard. Prior to coming here, she studied at National Law School of India. She currently works with the Sri Lankan Revenue Authority.
  • Mary Steedly of the Harvard Anthropology Department. A distinguished scholar of Indonesian society, she has done has done extensive fieldwork in Sumatra, particularly with respect to issues of history and memory.
  • Shihani DeSilva, a second-year Harvard Law student from Sri Lanka.
  • Amal Bass, a second-year Harvard Law student of Sri Lankan in ancestry and with extensive family there.
