Consensus Builder Becomes Chancellor at MIT
Lawrence Bacow ’76

As the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s new chancellor— a recently resurrected post with a new set of responsibilities— Lawrence Bacow ’76 has already begun to tackle a major task force’s recommendations on undergraduate life and education. His appointment is for an "indefinite" period of time: "I serve at the pleasure of the president," he says. In the coming years, Bacow will also help to address almost every conceivable issue facing a leading university, from which research initiatives to support to what sorts of national, international, and corporate partnerships to develop.

A former member of the Law School’s program on negotiation, Bacow expects to enjoy endless opportunities to apply his consensus-building skills. That’s nothing new for the author of Environmental Dispute Resolution, who—both in conjunction with and in addition to his job as chancellor—will remain active in his field. "Right now," he says, "approximately 10 percent of the work done on this campus is environmentally related."
