As direct Israeli-Palestinian negotiations appear to have ground to a halt, attention has shifted to less conventional methods for achieving mutually desirable outcomes for the two peoples. These include Track II diplomacy, isolated areas of coordination, a pro-active role of the third party and even unilateral action. Tonight’s panelists, all of whom have experience with direct Israeli-Palestinian talks, will suggest ways these alternative means can be used to the most constructive effect, while also discussing the dangers of their misuse.

Last October, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights adopted a standard setting decision in the Dorzema et al. v. Dominican Republic case when it condemned the Dominican State for the killing and collective expulsion of Haitian migrants by the armed forces. Professor Duhaime, the lead attorney on the case, will discuss the importance of the ruling, along with Professor Akram, who participated in the case as Amicus Curiae.

In Atala Riffo and Daughters v. Chile (2012), the Inter-American Court ruled for the first time that sexual orientation is a suspect classification. Karen Atala, a mother and a judge, successfully challenged Chile’s decision to award custody over her children to her ex-husband based on Ms. Atala's sexual orientation as a lesbian. Ms. Atala and her lawyer, Macarena Saez, will speak about their experiences litigating this important case and the implications for the future. Lunch served.

The TPP is a massive 12-country trade pact currently under negotiation between NAFTA members, and several Latin American and Asian countries. We will hear from the U.S. and Chile lead foreign investment treaty negotiators Daniel Bahar ('02) and Raimundo Gonzalez, and from Argentina's Ignacio Torterola.
