Stoffel Scholarships for Admitted LL.M. Students

Eligibility
Lawyers and/or activists from non-governmental organizations in the developing world who have at least a two-year proven track record in human rights and who have been admitted to the LL.M. Program are eligible for a Stoffel Scholarship.

Program of Study and External Commitments
Recipients of the Stoffel Scholarship will be required to engage in all classroom and related academic activities necessary to fulfill the requirements of the LL.M. degree. In addition, recipients are asked to lead one presentation such as a brownbag lunch or panel discussion at the International Center for Tolerance Education (ICTE) in New York City, and are invited to attend additional ICTE events for foreign human rights advocates and scholars studying at Harvard and other universities. The ICTE will cover all expenses related to travel and overnight stays in New York in conjunction with participation in these events.

Financial Award
The Stoffel Scholarship will include a financial award of up to $33,000. The exact amount of the award will be determined by the Scholarship's selection committee, based on the applicant's professional and academic record, as well as demonstrated financial need.

Post-Study
Scholarship recipients will be expected to prepare a brief report outlining Any applicant to the LL.M. Program at Harvard Law School who needs financial aid and meets the eligibility conditions listed above may apply for the Stoffel Scholarship by checking the applicable box on the Graduate Program Financial Aid Application Form. Stoffel Scholarship applicants must also complete the rest of the Financial Aid Application Form and submit it with their LL.M. application to the Graduate Program. In addition to financial need, the selection committee will consider the following criteria:

  • professional excellence and proven commitment to human rights;
  • academic excellence;
  • history of innovation within human rights;
  • connection to or affiliation with an organization, university, or government body that is likely to have an impact on the future of human rights within the applicant’s country; and
  • geographic diversity

    Their work during their year of study at Harvard Law School. It is generally expected and hoped that recipients of the Stoffel Scholarship will return to their home country to continue to work on human rights after the scholarship period. It is understood, however, that in exceptional circumstances Scholarship recipients may wish to pursue other human rights related opportunities such as a relevant SJD degree or a post-graduate fellowship or training program before returning to their home country.
