In the late 1980s, while completing his Masters Degree in Industrial Relations at the London School of Economics, Alex was a researcher at the Confederation of British Industry, the national employers’ federation in the UK. Afterwards he worked as a researcher for the Low Pay Unit, a research organisation lobbying for a national minimum wage in Britain (which was finally enacted in 1999).
In the last few years Alex has been a Research Associate at the Centre for Economic Performance, London School of Economics, working on the Future of Unions research programme.
In 2005 he became an editor of the British Journal of Industrial Relations.
He is currently a member of the research team that devised the 2004 Workplace Employment Relations Survey (WERS), the primary source of survey data on industrial relations in Britain.
Currently, Alex is working on the following trades union-related issues (the list is not exhaustive):
- pay determination in Britain
- the meaning of union effectiveness and its impact on worker desire for
unionisation
- the desire for union and non-union representation in Britain and the US
- the nature of ‘free-riding’ in Britain, New Zealand and Australia
- the financial circumstances of trades unions in Britain
- employer choice of union and non-union voice regimes
- factors affecting labour productivity, workplace performance, employment
growth, workplace closure and the industrial relations climate in Britain
