A Political Theory of Work: Working in the Service-Based Society
By Isabelle Ferreras
Just released in French at Les Presses de Sciences Po, Paris
Based on an in-depth ethnographic study of a critical case (check-out clerks in the supermarket industry in Belgium), this book spells out a new theory of what work is in the service-based society: it shows that work, as a social experience, is of an expressive, public, and “political” nature. Moreover, it shows that the normative content of this “political” nature relates to the democratic intuition. As a result, this analysis renews the discourse on social justice in general, and the current discourses about “fairness at work” or “decent work” in particular. Taking the transformations of the service-based economy into full consideration, this book argues for the recognition of the crucial role played by the work experience in the democratic life of contemporary societies.
