Bio: Robert V. Mendelsohn

Royal and Sun Alliance Insurance Group

After graduating from HLS, Mr. Mendelsohn worked at the law firm of Willkie Farr for four years, but left to join one of its clients, Bill Berkley. He spent 20 years with Berkley’s W.R. Berkley Corp. and became its president and chief operating officer. He joined Royal Insurance USA in January 1994 as chief executive officer. After the 1996 Sun merger, he was also named chairman and CEO of all Royal & Sun Alliance insurance companies in the United States. He was then named group CEO in December 1997, and moved to London. Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance Group, the result of a merger between two British insurance companies, Royal Insurance and Sun Alliance, is the UK’s largest general insurer, having nearly 50,000 employees and major operations in nearly 50 countries.
