Mark Stein

Mark is the author of Distributive Justice and Disability: Utilitarianism against Egalitarianism (Yale University Press, 2006).  The philosopher Peter Singer has praised this book as one that “transforms the debate about utilitarianism and egalitarianism.” Mark received his J.D. from Michigan Law School, and practiced law for several years before earning a Ph.D. in political science from Yale.  During his fellowship, he conducted research considering whether the principle of informed consent is worthy of respect only insofar as it promotes individual or social welfare. His inquiry focused on whether informed consent is subordinated to social welfare in randomized controlled trials.  Other projects he undertook during his tenure include analyzing the relationship between disability law and moral philosophy, and critically examining the view that scarce medical resources should be allocated randomly.
