This note identifies the distinguishing characteristics of professional work. Professionals are a subcategory of service providers. Professionals employ complex inference skills to deliver valuable services to their clients. The note argues that what distinguishes professionals from technicians and other service providers is grounded in an understanding of 1) what constitutes service provision and 2) how the various categories of service provision differ.
