You were recently honored by students with the Sacks-Freund Teaching Award. What do you like about teaching both the basic Constitutional Law class as well as the advanced Federal Courts class?
In Constitutional Law, I enjoying teaching legal doctrine, but I also love looking at the way the law has evolved in response to cultural and political currents. Many of the issues that are right at the surface of constitutional law carry a moral or political charge. It lends interest to the subject and tends to get students excited by class discussion.

What has been your favorite event at HLS? Why?
My favorite event has been a series of talks on the role of the pharmaceutical industry's policies regarding drug pricing and intellectual property rights, as well as University biotechnology licensing agreements, on access to essential medicines in the developing world. The talks were sponsored by a variety of campus organizations, highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of the topic which involves issues of intellectual property, research innovation, international human rights and global health and ethics.

What did you do in your summers? How has that experience helped direct your career path?
For my first summer, I went to the American Civil Liberties Union of the National Capital Area. Here, I investigated cases involving the First Amendment, Fourth Amendment and prisoner's rights. I researched and drafted legal memoranda, interviewed clients, visited sites and engaged in community advocacy. This experience showed me that I wanted to specialize and focus on civil rights. While I appreciated First Amendment issues, I was more interested specifically in racial justice. This allowed me to narrow my focus for the following summer.
