The Rat Roommate

Charge: murder. On the issue of D's intention to kill V, the prosecution, in rebuttal, puts a police officer, W, on the stand to testify that R, D's roommate, after being fully warned of his rights, told W, "The night before the killing D said something about his planning to get V." D objects. What ruling and why?
