Pacific Legal Foundation’s Program for Judicial Awareness announces its Ninth Annual Student Writing Competition

This year’s first prize winner will receive a cash award of $5,000, with up to two additional awards of $3,000 and $1,500 available for other outstanding submissions. The Program for Judicial Awareness will also assist prizewinners in publishing their entries.

Entrants may write on one of three topics, each concerning an issue of public policy with meaningful legal dimensions. This year’s topics address issues currently being debated throughout the legal community: (1) Using the Supreme Court’s adherence to Penn-Central’s multi-factored analysis, which types of land use regulations may be struck down in the coming decade?; (2) Are free translation services mandated under the Civil Rights Act of 1964’s prohibition of discrimination on the basis of national origin? And (3) Why is the “shocks the conscience” standard inappropriate to gauge substantive violations of the Due Process Clause in cases involving property rights?

A new competition category had been added this year for junior law faculty members. This category offers a prize of $10,000 for writing of distinction on the conceptual and jurisprudential problems entailed in balancing governmental takings with a theory of “givings.”
