General Interest: New opportunity for JD students doing scholarship that raises questions in social theory
The Program on Law and Social Thought announces a new initiative, the Social Theory Working Group, a joint enterprise of JD and graduate students here at HLS. We want to thank Dean Kagan and the European Law Research Center for providing the funds supporting the Groups work.
The STWG will invite to campus prominent producers of contemporary social thought, including of course legal thought, for a series of engagements with HLS students. Each guest will hold a public seminar on his or her work, and meet with STWG members to discuss their work. There will also be a dinner for more informal exchanges. The overall goal is to support students doing scholarly work that raises social-theoretical questions. A second goal is to foster the intellectual community shared by JD and graduate students here at HLS.
The graduate student part of the Group has convened.
It is now time to convene the JD part of the group. [Note: we tried to do this in the fall but our announcement was too late for interested JDs to consider it. We hope we are in time to be part of your decisionmaking for the spring term!]
What does joining the STWG mean? Members of the STWG are responsible for organizing 4 on-campus visits and (if they are resident in the Boston area when the events actually occur) attending them. (If the budget allows, we will pay for return trips to Cambridge for group members who have graduated by the time visits which they have organized take place.) All JD students, including 1Ls, are eligible. There is no academic credit for Group members; this is an extracurricular activity.
If you are interested in participating as an organizer, please send your resume/c.v. and a one-page statement of your research interests to Terry Cyr, tcyr@law.harvard.edu. These materials are due by midnight Monday, November 12. Be sure to include your email address.
