Eligibility for Summer Funding
First and second year JD students, approved joint degree students, and "in residence" SJD students who work in an eligible public interest job for at least 10 weeks, and apply for 2007 summer funding by the December 14, 2007, deadline.
- Summer income from all sources for your SPIF placement is considered in determining the amount of summer funding you can receive. Income for your SPIF job must fall within the funding cap of $6000 for 1Ls and $7500 for 2Ls and SJDs. Earnings above these caps will result in a reduction to your SPIF award.
- Even if you do not qualify for academic-year financial aid, you are eligible for up to $3600 in SPIF.
- 1Ls must work 6 hours on the Public Interest Auction to qualify for funding.
Other details:
- You can split the summer between two public interest organizations, but you will not qualify for funding if you do not work at least 10 weeks (350 hours) at a SPIF eligible position.
- Students who must work fewer than ten weeks may speak to the SPIF staff about the possibility of receiving a prorated award. Prorated awards may be available once adequate funding for students working 10 weeks is allocated.
- SPIF is not increased for students working more than 10 weeks.
- Failure to meet the 350 hour requirement, for any reason, will result in a student returning the portion of their award for which they were ineligible to the SPIF office.
- Students who receive supplemental funding which increases the total funding for their SPIF position above the funding cap will be required to return a portion of their SPIF award in order to maintain consistency with the funding cap guidelines.
- SPIF is not available prior to enrollment at HLS, after graduation from HLS, or for LLM students.
