2008-2009 Returning Student On-Campus Housing Lottery and Room Selection
Please read all of the following BEFORE submitting the 2008-2009 Returning Student On-Campus Housing Application.
APPLICATION PROCESS
The housing lottery application will be available online beginning Thursday, March 27, 2008 and is due on Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at 4:00pm EST.
There are three phases to the online application process. First, applicants must complete the 2008-2009 Returning Student On-Campus Housing Application online to be included in the random housing lottery number drawing. Next, if applicants want to be included in a group to be able to select rooms close to one another they must visit the group tool website between Thursday, April 10, 2008 and Sunday, April 13, 2008 to enter the names of their group members.
Finally, applicants will receive an email containing their lottery number on Monday, April 14, 2008. Those with lottery numbers of 140 or lower will have the opportunity to select a room online. Wednesday, April 16, 2008, numbers 1-70 will select and numbers 71-140 will select on Friday, April 18, 2008. Those with lottery numbers greater than 140 will be placed on a wait list.
Final dorm room confirmation will be emailed to applicants by Tuesday, April 22, 2008.

ELIGIBILITY
All students fully enrolled at HLS who want to live on campus in the dormitories during the 2008-2009 academic year are eligible to enter the lottery.
Students who are currently on medical leave or deferment who expect to return in the fall may participate in the returning student on-campus housing lottery and room selection provided that their HLS email address and password are still valid. Please contact the HLS Dean of Students Office at hlsdorms@law with any questions about eligibility.
HLS dormitory housing is for individual students and all dormitory rooms are for single occupancy.
DEADLINE
In order for returning students to be assigned a lottery number, completed application forms must be submitted online by 4:00 p.m., on Tuesday, April 8, 2008. Applicants with disabilities seeking accommodations should contact Cathleen Segal at csegal@law or at 617.495.1880. Students who apply late will be placed on the wait list.
HOUSING GROUPS
Applicants who are interested in selecting rooms close to one another may enter the lottery as a group of up to four students. Applicants in groups will be assigned consecutive lottery numbers. In order to be considered a group, each applicant must enter the online Group Tool between Thursday, April 10, 2008 and Sunday, April 13, 2008 and confirm the members of the group. All members of the group must confirm their participation through the online form before the group will be successfully formed. Applicants will be notified of their group formation by email.
LOTTERY PROCESS
All applicants will be assigned a random lottery number and notified of their number via email on Monday, April 14, 2008. Room selection will take place online on Wednesday, April 16, 2008 for lottery numbers 1-70 and Friday, April 18, 2008 for lottery numbers 71-140. Applicants with a lottery number higher than 140 will be placed on the wait list. Detailed instructions about the online room selection form will be included in the email containing your lottery number. During the room selection process, applicants will be given an eight hour period to select a room.
Floor plans indicating rooms and building layouts are available on the HLS Housing website. Applicants should familiarize themselves with these prior to room selection in order to assist in the decision-making process.
WAIT LIST
Applicants with a lottery number of 141 or higher will be placed on a wait list and will have an opportunity to choose from the remaining dormitory rooms after the incoming student housing lottery and room selection processes in May. If you are placed on the wait list but find alternate housing and no longer wish to be considered, please inform the HLS Dean of Students Office via e-mail at hlsdorms@law.
RESIDENCY
The residency period for the dormitories in 2008-2009 is Tuesday, August 26, 2008 through Tuesday, May 19, 2009. Graduating students may be able to remain in their room through the Friday after Commencement, June 5, 2009, unless otherwise stated in their dormitory license, specifically North residents will need to move the day after exams conclude to a room in Gropius to enable some mechanical upgrade work in the summer '09.
Students who want to remain in dormitory housing beyond the academic year move out date will need to apply for summer housing and relocate to the designated building. They will be charged a summer housing rate. Details regarding the summer housing application process will be provided during spring 2009.
Dormitory room rentals for each academic year are made for the entire academic year. Rents may be pro-rated when a student graduates, defers, or withdraws from the Law School.
Residents who wish to change rooms or leave the dorms during the year should contact the Dean of Students Office at hlsdorms@law. Requests will be considered on a monthly basis.

Please note that this is a secure web application and you will need to login using your HLS username which is the part of your HLS email address that comes before the "@" symbol plus the tag ".jd10" if you have one. For example, if your email address were "jsmith@law.harvard.edu," then your username would be "jsmith." If your email address were "jsmith@jd10.law.harvard.edu," then your username would be "jsmith.jd10". Your password is the same password that you use to login to your HLS email account.
