Why We Need You, and How You Can Get Involved

As you can tell, HLS Advocates depends crucially on student initiative, interest, and involvement. We are NOT driven from the top or told what to do by the Human Rights Program. Instead, we value a flat hierarchy whereby the regional groups - and the volunteers themselves - craft their own work. In this sense, we encourage all volunteers to pursue their own interests through the framework of Advocates.

Do you have a particular interest in Northern Irish human rights violations, but don't see a project dealing with that particular issue? Are you a Lebanese LL.M with a business background with a particular interest in human rights practice in your home country? In all likelihood, there will be many of you who won't find the "perfect" project to meet your particular interests. There are two answers to this concern:

(1) try out a project we do have for this year - the skills you'll gather will be applicable generally, and who knows - perhaps you'll find a passion for something you never knew about before, and
(2) sit down with an interest group coordinator and the folks in the HRP to start thinking about ways in which you could develop your particular interest into an Advocates project.

Approximately half of Advocates' projects are student-developed projects, including each of four above-mentioned projects. We need your talents, your background, and your organizing talents to keep Advocates dynamic and interesting into the future.

The first step to join HLS Advocates is to attend the mandatory 2006 Fall Training, this September 29th & 30th. This training is designed to get students of all backgrounds up to speed on human rights advocacy. We will introduce you to our methodology, provide you with some background on the major human rights mechanisms worldwide, introduce you to international legal research, and allow you to whet your appetite for more in a simulated "moot court" setting with the rest of your regional groups. Please check back soon for exact times and locations as well as a schedule of the training - we hope to see you there!

If you have any questions regarding our training or the HLS Advocates in general, please email us at hlsadvoc@law.harvard.edu
